Dryad bow blank build and shoot-PICS
« on: February 16, 2008, 04:16:00 PM »
After speaking with Wingnut a coupla' weeks ago I ordered a blank and promptly got the video to watch and get stuff ready.
I had unsuccessfully attempted 3 board bows and 2 laminated bow blanks all of which became firewood and one really crappy bow-fire wood too.
What's different here is the video, and the blank has been sawn so you do not have to worry about side tillering and limbs that end up caddywumpus. So get the tools ready! Scrapers and rasps and files.

A vise and bench helps too

The building emphasizes angular limbs with 'facets' so you can keep track of how much material is being removed-giving you better odds of success than with other blanks and methods.
But pay attention to the video and take your time.

Sorry about the dappled pic...but you gotta make one of these so you can see your tillering progress.

The grip area reqiires some shaping with a rasp.

I found that a Nicholson 50 and a scraper were my main tools along with coarse sandpaper.

I stuck with the tillering and got carried away-forgot to tak any more pics of that.
The tillering took about 4 hours of steady work-this is the crucial part and will determine success or failure.
Here is where the video really helps and don't lose track of the facets.(see video)

A leather wrap is optional

As a finish I went with Tru-Oil, and will probably do 6 or 7 coats.
The bow ended up at 52#@28, or so and shoots amazing. Fast, accurate, and waay easy on the eyes!

You can do at least as good, it is doable in a day, and a lot of fun!

Will you post a full draw pic?  She looks really nice. Did the blank come with the tip overlays?      Pat

Pat, a full draw pic will be posted later today. I just put on another coat of finish, which will be dry in a few hours, and I'll have to get someone to take the pic.

Shakes,

That is the bamboo backed bow blank.  Bjorn did a very nice job with this and finished it in a day.

The tip overlays come standard but you gotta shape em.

Bjorn,
Your bow is very nice, good job.  I can't wait to shoot one I have made; it must be pretty exciting the first time.

Your Workmate is cool also.  Isn't that the version sold in Europe that we can't buy here?  It has cast aluminum supports instead of stamped steel.

It is very exciting to shoot, and lots of scraping filing and sanding.
Here's the full draw pic:

It is a very good shooting bow; very smooth and quiet and fast too!Ooops! Wonder if I re-sized that?

Did you put an arrow rest on it?  If so what did you use?

I did put an arrow rest on the bow. Thank you for asking, and I used a small piece of limb from a failed blank, that I tried to build about two years ago.
Thanks Mike; I am very happy with that tillering job myself!

Excellent Job!

I sure want to give it a try myself, just can't seem to afford it right now.
