Handle pictures
« on: January 08, 2011, 10:48:00 AM »
Guys I'm getting ready to start a Osage selfbow ( my first ) and would appreciate some pics of different handles and why You like that design.

I have really big hands so I don't think a bendy handle will work to good for Me.

Thanks in advance.

My favorite by far is a locator-style grip with a simple leather or rattan wrap with a floppy leather rest:

"Walk softly...and carry a bent stick."

"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God the Father through him."  Col. 3:17

I like a bulbous handle and I like for the limbs to bent right up to(if not through) the handle. Here are a few pics...

This one has a rattan handle wrap.

Another with rattan handle wrap and a small add on shelf.

a bulbous handle with a floppy rest and hemp cordage handle wrap.

This shows pic with finished handle wrap(rattan) and leather "packing" on the back of the handle to fit my hand better.
Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!

I prefer this style of handle.  It keeps my grip in the same spot each time.

I would think that a nice fat bulbous handle would be best for a person with big hands.

I'm not a fan of the bulbous grips...they don't feel stable in my hand, they kinda roll around a bit for me.  I prefer a Howard Hill style like these -

This one was wrapped with leather but glued with no lacing, very clean finish I think.
