Sticks, you must be talking from experience, you got the sequence right:  adrenaline rush, then dishartening, one second your standing there at full draw, the next your holing the arrow in one hand and the bottom limb in the other, with a pile of pcs. at your feet.

Thanks everyone for all the good comments on the hackberry bow, we'll see how well she takes heat treating.

Kelly, this is my first time working with hackberry, but so far I like it.  The grain is somewhat interwoven, when I was narrowing the thickness with a draw knife it pulled some splinters, till I got them worked out I was at the lower end of my desired weight.  When you get home and work yours down I'd suggest using a rasp to get your thickness, just to be safe.....Dan

I haven't had one blow up yet, but it very well could have on my first ever osage selfbow. I cut through a knot and of course after shooting it for about a week a splinter started down from the edge and into the ring. I'm glad I noticed it in time or I'm sure it would have came apart eventually. I managed to repair it with some flax comb, but I don't shoot it anymore. It's a clear reminder of what "NOT" to do, and I learned from it. Vowing to never make that mistake again, so it's all good.......gotta break some eggs if you want to make a cake.
I'm proud of your all's positive attitudes and willingness to keep trying, I know how frustrating it feels believe me.

Dan very nice bow, great lines and nice curves.

Trad, that is some nice contrast. Looking good, can't wait to see her with some finish.

Pete, it looks like it's hinged just past the fades with very little bend in the outer 2/3 of the limbs.  Did it blow on the inner 1/3?  Any close-up pictures of the repair?

Keenan, thanks for the comments they are certainly much appreciated, especially coming from a master like you.
I just took it off the form after heat treating, can't wait till it rehydrates to see how much draw weight I picked up, finish tillering, and to start shooting it in.  I have a little work to do to get the string to track better though, not off much, but those recurves make it touchy.....Dan

Take two!
I was getting ready to ship the bow when I noticed something wrong. In direct sunlight I could see tiny air bubbles in the glue joints. What happened is I used a 36 grit belt for the core laminations and it left grooves big enough to trap air, despite using twice as much glue as normal. I figured if there was a half dozen bubbles visible on the surface, then there must be a bunch inside the limb. Since I wont risk having a bow break I'm starting another. Now to find a use for a new box of 36 grit belts.
I didnt miss, thats right where I was aiming

That's to bad Greg, but a good catch. I don't know much about glass bows, so I don't know if it would hurt anything.

I hope it holds up for ya trad, I like the yellow overlays on the belly side, is that Osage?

Also what Koche said, it appears a bit flat in the outer 2/3 of the limbs. Can you get that bending a bit more or will it drop you below your target wt. too much?

I think if you got that part flexing more evenly it would take some stress off your fades and the next 8" after the fades, that looks like it might be under alot of pressure?

Dang sorry to hear about the air bubbles Greg. Would it really hurt the performance of the bow?

I'd be happy to field test it for a couple of years if your looking for a guinea pig.
