Just some off the floor shave pile wedges Kelly to get a little more bend.

I need to build me another caul or two with a little more reflex plus I got some green wood that needs to go on a caul to season or it will be a mess. A pretty nasty piece of HHB I cut early this week and need to split.

On a completely unrelated topic, AKmud, I have that same welding helmet. Nice. And yeah, kelly, I'll let you know when I ship it.

Developed a pretty bad hinge almost instantly about 8" from the top limb tip. I put a patch in it.

I was planning on flipping the tips with heat but the more I ponder the dilemma I think I am gonna thin both tips and glue on some underlays and glue in some flip. Might even go with some brush nocks. Don't really know at this point. I may just start on another stave and set this one to the side.    :dunno:

Kris, I did underlays on a hickory recurve I made. I had originally built the bow over 10 years ago and got a hinge just below the curves so I set it in the "corner of shame". Last year a friend as if I'd make his girlfriend a bow so I brought this hickory recurve out, added black walnut underlays and made a sweet shooting bow for Hannah.
Setting it aside and starting on another is a good idea to clear your mind about the screw up but you shouldn't have to take 10 years to do it like I did! d;^)

Pat I remember you posting that bow. Those underlays looked great.
Sorry to hear about the hinge Kris.

I patched it and chased a ring on another stave and worked on my yew bow.

I would like to save it and I think it is fixable I just need to figure out the direction she wants to go. She's got alot of character and really want to be a bow.

 Off to the drawing board.

I haven't posted much about my swap bow. I'm still working on a couple that I need to finish for some folks. I have a osage self bow started, the material for a BBO bow and some nice edge grained hickory/pecan boards. My plan is to make all three and see which you all think I should use as the swap bow. My biggest problem is the cold. I don't have heat in the garage. I'm hoping to get alot done this month if it would only warm up to about 50 degrees and stay there. I will put up pics of the pecan I have wenge overlays on to get some flip in the tips. I want to make one like it for a possible swap bow.

I havent posted my progress either--but that doesnt mean im not working feverishly!  I figure that I want to try something I havent done before, so.... I located some ipe (finally) that I just got glued up with a hickory backer AND with all these pretty self bows on here I got the bug to try that too- so I knocked down a shaggy hickory and found out the hard way what spiral grain in all about!  I have 3 bows roughed out and strapped down and a pile more staves in process! My garage is a complete disaster!

I got wrapped in a yew bow that's been in the works for a while but I'm working on my swap bow to probably gonna have some under lays since I got a good hinge going near a tip so it'll have to have some overlays to fix that issue but I think it add to the over all beauty of the bow.

I thought mine would be done by now, but I ran into a problem.  The wood on the inside of the limbs is very dark from heat treating, so I used a gold paint pen to write all the info on the limb.  When I try to put a coat of tru oil over the writting, it smears.  Any suggestions as to what I can use over the paint pen that won't smear would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks,  Dan

Same with me. I'm trying my hand at an osage self bow while the rest of my osage staves are drying. Taking my time and trying to learn as I go.  Luckily there are lots of great posts on TG that I am able to use as references. So... Keep'em comin', guys!
Someone mentioned on here a while back about what it sounds and feels like to finally chase a ring. Man! Were they right! When I worked up the nerve to flip the DK over and exert a little elbo grease it was great!
Enjoying reading and seeing all these posts, too.

Dan: superglue should seal it up.  However, consider using India ink.  You shouldn't have a compatibility problem with TruOil or spray-application finishes with it.

I use India ink also. I think you can get it in white too.

I resumed work on my swap bow. Gonna deo horn under lays to stiffen up the weak spoy in the tip and do the same on both tips. Should look real nice and fix the problem all at the same time.

The wenge overlays in glue up...

...and the antler overlays after some initial shaping.

This wenge seems kinda brittle. The next one I try will be with osage overlays. I hope this one holds up.

I switched gears on my trade bow. I worked down a stave to ring that has some real nice natural reflex/deflex in one limb. real nice stave with one real nice knot hole just above the fade area.

Got it floor tillered today and will heat it tomorrow. Hope I can get a nice R/D tiller on it. The other one I was working on is not lost but in a corner for later still giving it some thought.

Heated a limb on my trade bow today, and I'll do the other tonight hopefully.
