Im not sure what failed- the last bow I "made" HBH failed due to the backing strip- I knew it was questionable but I tried to make it work anyway.

Here is another pic of the backing, maybe somebody with more experience can figure it out.

The bow was 1 3/16 wide til 12" from the tips and then tapered to 1/2".  I started with 3/8" ipe and 1/8" backing and really thought I had it!  I stopped last nite - I was tired and didnt want to screw anything up- HA!  live and learn I guess

Eagleone, your dimensions are good. After looking at the pics again I see the ipe is thicker than I thought.   I'd say you had a backing failure. Is this the same wood as the last one?  How about your new one? I wouldn't use it if it was. You don't see hickory break straight across grain unless it is diseased.

Pat- I hope not- but Im not sure.  I found 2 good boards at menards and cut them up into backing strips- i know they got mixed around since then.  I guess we'll find out soon enough tho!

Well, I had a few hours free tonight so I got my trade bow from stave to the long string.  I've got to get it on the caul before I do much more to it, but so far, so good.  The pictures make it look like I did a terrible job of following my centerline/grain, but that's not quite the case. It's got some dips and turns near the end of the closest limb that play tricks on the eyes.  I've opted for a uniform thickness pyramid bow.  I've always been drawn to that profile and love how easily and cleanly they come together with a few simply hand tools.  Thanks for looking!  More to come...

Man what a surprise I got thru FedEx today. Ive been following all these builds and low and behold the" Mourning Cloak" has arrived at my house. It's a beauty and has a new proud owner. Many thanks for your skills  and being able to watch it on Tradgang. I looked at this pretty riser on tradgang post so many times, now I got the real mcoy to look at and hold in my hand. Thank you John for a fine  bow and case.

Just wanted to put up a couple of pictures of my bow for the swap. I hope the dimensions don't give it away.
It's a BBO with a Red Elm core and Walnut tip overlays. The Osage is unstained, it's just really dark with a redish  tint.
The bow is 60" 40lbs@24"
Now all I have to do is make a new string and the rest and a handle.

Thanks,
 Mark

Nice looking bows! I had a bad day in the shop. blew up a static tip yew and cut my index finger to the tendon with a draw knife.

went back to shop after getting sewed up and laid up another yew and done a little work on my swap bow.

Momma said there would be days like that    :knothead:
