Just my luck....

Got my 3rd trade bow glued up (hickory backed red oak) a few weeks ago and just got around to cutting it out recently - (I glued in 3" of reflex)

This red oak 1x4 looked PERFECT on the outside but when I cut out the taper I found this -

There was NO evidence of a knot on either side...

I'm hoping once I get it worked down that it will be small enough it won't be an issue. What do you guys think? The limbs are about 5/8" at this point so I have quite a bit of shaping to do, it's not even floor tillered yet.

The bow is 2" wide at the fades tapering down to 1/2". I thought about trimming it on all sides, but I don't know if I will have enough meat left over to make weight...

Ideas?

If you hadn't shaped your handle area you could have reduced the side with the knot on it. That knot worries me!!!

I am thinking of just trimming from the handle to just past the knot then doing the other three sides the same. This will give me a straight limb profile for about 6" then will taper to the tips.... The knot appears to be 1/16-1/8" deep so I shouldn't lose too much material.

The more I work with wood, the more I like metal! (metal is hard to tiller though...)

AKmud, saturate it with super glue and let that cure before you reduce the width.

I ended up taking about 3/16" off starting a the widest part of the fade. The straight profile ran out to about 5" past the knot then the original taper took over. There is a little bit of darker wood still, but it appears solid. Hopefully it will tiller out OK.

I narrowed the handle down to just over 1" and re-shaped the fades. I think I saved it but that knot area still has me a bit nervous.

Okay, here's where I'm at with my trade bow. It's 68" tip to tip with a pyramidal limb shape (i.e. sides tapering in a straight line from fade to tip and an even limb thickness). I've got quite a bit of tweaking to do, but right now it's on the short string (4" brace) and tillered to 20". It shows 1 3/4" of reflex when relaxed, and 7/8" when immediately unstrung (as shown in the last picture). My camera really curves the image, so it looks like it's dead flat in that picture. Sorry. I'm looking forward to sending this one on in the next month or so.

AKmud, looks good from down here. Did you reduce the red oak before glue up, or glue the hickory on before reducing the board?

Red, I reduced it after the glue up. I've been having trouble making weight lately so I didn't want to take a chance again!

Well, I'm about to start. Or at least closer than I was. Wife's bathroom is all but done, and I picked up a piece of ipe this morning from a contractor cleaning out his barn. The plan is (and has been for some time) a bbi bow. Haven't made one yet, but I can't get it out of my head. I guess it's time to order the boo and make some progress. I really don't want to scramble at the last minute.

Anyone know how ipe responds to dry heat?

I decided to build a recurve for my swap bow. I just finished up a warm up bow (my first recurve) to hopefully get me ready to put together a decent bow for X. I will be building on the same form of the bow I just finished. Thanks Greg for the help and the use of your form.

Greg and I found this wood at a local business specializing in urban trees, the Black Locust and Golden Rain came from there.

I can't wait to see this under glass, it really is pretty stuff.
