TG Bow Swap - What to make?
« on: January 15, 2011, 07:26:00 PM »
So..... I've been thinking about the bow  "I"  want to make and right away, I came up with questions. Most important of which, what bow does  "HE"  want to receive.

Whenever I build a bow for someone, I like to think of how the bow is going to be used.  Different bow for different uses.

Does my recipient want a hunting bow?  Is the bow going to be used for 3D shooting??  Turkey blind???  Squirrel woods???  Field Archery?   Open terrain??   Treestand????  Bowfishing???  All important..... all asking different things of the bow and wood choice.

I looked my recipient up.... you know, snooped around a bit, here and there, looking for clues....   By my figuring he wants a hunting bow... for sure. I already knew the weight and draw length.  I'm looking to make as sure as I can that my recipient will get a bow to suit his archery interests and needs.

What do you all plan on using your bow for?  If it were me making your bow, I'd like to know....

One that would always put the arrow where I wanted it would be great but if I settled for second choice one aesthetically pleasing and able to provide food for the family  :D

Hmm, Never really thought of a bow as being that specialized, but what you said makes sense.  I kind of like a bow to be versatile, one that might not be outstanding in one particular area but performs "well" in any area.

AWESOME POST!  I was wondering the same thing..

As for me.. I am a target shooter.. I like a smooth draw.. a really fancy looking stick to fling my arrows..   Bells and whistles are cool to!

Great question.. can make a big difference in what you might build.  Hope everyone takes the time to respond to this thread.

i say build what you like to shoot. introduce someone to a new style of bow. beleive me there are so many differences to different genre's of bows.each and every one has something to offer in the interest if flinging an arrow with presision.im also more than sure that the recipient will be more than happy with the thought and craftsmanship you put into it. ruddy

I want a 3 piece takedown.  It's the only bow I don't have and don't really want to make.  Thanks  :)
Take a kid hunting!

I did some snooping on the fellow I'm building for too.  It is very tempting just to send him a PM and ask what types of woods he'd like, but then that spoils the surprise.

No-sage, if your building a bow for me it will be for 3D and hunting whitetails.  Beyond that - surprise me.

I looked up my recipient too and well I had to go back to the drawing board to change my plans to suit what he likes best.

So If my bowyer is watching or reading for some info I like R/D BBI bow thats short in a sunburst pattern or a really short glass bow.  I'm not into speed I'm into how quiet it is.

I will be happy with anything I get, as Ruddy said, it is a new experience not a wrong bow. That said my shooting is mostly stump shooting mixed with still/stalk hunting for squirrel and whitetail.

Great post!  Maybe we should include that info in the next sign up...

For me, I will be hunting mainly but it may also make it to the range for some formal shoots.

Good thread, I had researched and my draw had already gave some good clues,so that part I think I have dialed.
For whoever drew my name I had decided that this would be a suprise bow for my wife. She dosn't even know that this is going on,but seems I'm always doing something like this so she won't be pondering. She dose bowhunt but not quite strong enough poudage for the trad stuff yet So her bow will be target for working towards hunting, So 35-45 lbs and glass or wood. she realy likes the Sythian style curvy bows.Hope that helps,

Fellas I'm just as excited to think about the options of the bow I going to be creating as I am about the one I'll be receiving, but if anyone is curious I like a bow thats built for the hunting woods.

You know that right there is one of the things I love about John Scifres. Straight and to the point without pulling any punches. LOL

 I will follow suite...

Keenan, I would like a bow that draws to 28.5 around 50ish Or Pat or KerryB or whoever got me this year.

This not knowing who got me is killing me. Now I know what you guys where going through last year. LOL

Actually to follow in Johns step and just call it I want a bow from everybody in the swap. If it stays the same guys in I will have a bow from everybody by the time I am about 125 yrs old! Ok maybe just half of you   :biglaugh:

We'll just have to see what the luck of the draw brings us.

No Sage I think your point is well taken.  I know I would want to build as close to what is wanted.  Obviously if you only build longbows then you probably can't build a recurve and vice versa.  Maybe everyone should post a real general idea of what they would truly like.  Me I am kind of partial to recurves but have and shoot longbows as well.  I certainly wouldn't be disappointed with either and am kind of fishing here if you know what I mean.
