My recipe, your comments please
« on: January 17, 2011, 10:17:00 AM »
Let me know what your thinking. I have an alright red oak board with pretty decent edge grain, not good enough to stand alone. I am going to add a 3/16" thick quarter sawn hickory backing. My goal is 66" ntn and 50# @ 29.5". Will I have an over powering issue with my hickory backing? I have a planer so I can thin down the backer if need be.

Thanks all

Thin your hickory down to 1/8" or slightly less.

I knew you would jump in Pat. Your the Bowyers Bible on-line! Its all glued up so I can run it through my planer tonite to take .06-.07" of stock off. Would 1.375" wide at the fades work? Or should I narrow it down more?

For red oak I'd keep it on the wider side. If 1.375 is what you have go with that. I'd carry that width out to mid limb before tapering to the tips.
