Which side of nock needs to be deeper?
« on: January 19, 2011, 04:38:00 PM »
I'm close to finishing an BBO and the upper limb has a little curve in it.  So when I'm looking at it from the belly, the upper limb curves a little to the left .  Surprisingly, this curve is the same when braced or unbraced.  There is no twist.  I looked at the bow carefully from all directions and only the upper limb has the curve.  It's not too bad, but the string is definitely left of center where it lies over the handle.
I have room to deepen the string nocks.  Which side do I need to file deeper?  Left or right?  I used to know this but I can't convince myself to go deeper on the LEFT.  ...don't want to make it worse!
    Thanks for the help.

Left as you stated. But can't you just do a little heat straightening to correct this problem? What type glue did you use for glue-up? Art

I used smooth-on two part epoxy and cooked it at 120 degrees.
I don't think it's bad enough that it would require heat and I hope I have toom to just deepen the nock on the left side.
Thanks Art.

Alan, I would heat it and make it perfect, won't take much time. From shooting it over and over, it might move more to the left. But yes deepen the left side to allow the string to move closer to center.

Roy's correct. Doesn't take much heat to move those tips and it may draw more to that one side over time. I've had to make such corrections even on finished bows without harming the finish.....Art

I would first run a piece of string down the center of the tips, end to end to measure how much it needs to move to make it straight. At the curved end tip, you will need to hold the string where you feel it should be to make it straight, and measure that distance. Then determine where the bend/curve starts and clamp it at the riser side of that point in a padded vice with the curve pointed upwards. Then hang a gallon jug of water on the end of the limb tip from the string groove. Then take a metal tape measure balanced on the floor and run it from the floor up to the bottom side of the limb. Leave a gap between the bottom of the bow limb and the end of the tape the distance you need it to move, plus about 1/16th more. Apply heat with a heat gun to the belly side, right at the end of the vice where your curve starts, keep the heat gun about 12 inches from the bow. Then keep an eye on the bow and end of tape measure, in about 5 minutes you should see the bow getting closer to the tape measure. When it almost touches the end ot the tape measure, cut the heat. Let it cool a good half hour, till the wood feels cool. Take the weight off and then check it.

OR, bring it over to my shop this Sunday or any night this week and I will help you.. Piece of cake Alan:)

deepen the nock on the oposite side you want the string to go to. If the string needs to go left cut the right knock deeper. You might have to retaper the limb tip to even it up. This is easily done
