64" R/D 2-Piece Long Bow Build Along
« on: January 23, 2011, 07:12:00 PM »
The bow I am building is a 2-Piece 64" R/D Long Bow for an elk hunting trip I will be taking to Idaho this year. There are many different types of take down systems for a 2 piece bow. I orginally wanted to use the fiberglass sleeve type connection, but once I had the riser together I did not want to cover up the riser wood, so I am going with the bow bolt.

Let's get started.

I will be using a combination of grey actionwood and rosewood for the riser with black and red phenolic between the woods.

The riser is going to have a radius of rosewood in the riser. I had to build a jig for the cut which was done on the band saw.

Here is the cut I made on the rosewood. It is still attached to the jig.

Here is the cuts made for the riser, the red and black phenolic that will make up the riser.

Ther riser cut and shaped on the Rigid Oscillating belt sander. This is a fine tool.

Next comes the limb materials.
2 - zebrawood parallels
1 - actionboo parallel
1 - actionboo taper .002
2 - clear glass
for a total thickness of .368 at the butt.

I got the riser materials from Kennym. I can not say enough about the quality of the limb materials and the great customer service.

The bow was cooked in the overn for 5 hours and then allowed to cool. Here is the bow off the form after cooling down overnight in the oven and cleaned up.

Here is a close up of the riser with the locator pin removed.
