Board bow lay out ?
« on: January 28, 2011, 09:38:00 PM »
I have a red oak 1x3 I like to turn into a bow. I shooting for a target weight of #50@28". Should I Lay it out in a pyramid style like 4est trekker's design or would I be better off with trimming it down like "perfect bow" design in TBB1?

Pyramid- 68" NTN 8" handle 2 1/2" width faded to 1/2" at tips. 8" glued on handle.

"Perfect bow"- 68" NTN 6" hand1e area. 1 1/2" width for the middle 2' faded out to 1/2 tips.

If you're going for a rigid handled bow then a pyramid design would be appropriate I would think. That design is better suited for a longer draw while still holding good string angle for less stack.  But if you want a working handled bow then use the retangular design. JMO.............Art

Thanks Art I wanted to do a rigid handle but didn't know if the board was to narrow.

Red oak is all I use, mostly because its all we have around here, that and hickory of course. I make mine 68" long, 1 1/2" wide and taper to 1/2" about half way up the limb. Seems to work good for my 29+ draw. I back all of them with 1/8" hickory also, I have never worked a solid oak bow.

Thanks Chris for your input on your way. I have started on one pyrimid style one but I have found some boards I can use in 1x2's. I going to try at both designs.
