Making my first bow... need pics
« on: January 29, 2011, 01:56:00 PM »
I am making my first laminated bow and need some ideas. I have all my tools in order, but I am unsure what woods I want to use. Could you please post some pictures of your bows telling the woods used so I can get some ideas? Thanks a bunch

Look at  "Build Alongs"
Never believe that you are worthless .... you can always be used as a bad example!

A little research here and on the internet in general will turn up dozens of build alongs, with something to be learned from every one. Learning to build is a process of gradual accumulation of knowledge and practice... and it doesn't have an end

Are you looking at doing glass lam or just wood?   Can't help with the latter, but if you check the "how to" sections on my site there's a lot of info for you...

 www.dickwightman.com

The Gallery shows about 20 bows with discussion of woods used and lam thicknesses.

"How I Build a Bow" is a detailed build along, and there is a new build along that is, rather weirdly, in the section labeled "Converting a Sander"... It's a project that just kind of grew.  It's almost done (maybe today) and then I'll sort out the web pages and separate out the bow build.

Dick I like what you did with that sander. I hadn't explored that option with mine yet. That looks to be my next project. I have been thinking about buying and edge sander but since I already have this type seems it would be best to do what you've done. Does the belt go below the surface of the table or is it slightly above it? Thanks for the link.

Savage...  quick answer, don't want to change the direction of the thread... the belt goes just below, but unfortunately wanders up under pressure.  I need to tweak the belt alignment a bit.  If you want to discuss in more detail, email me direct:

Why not post it on that thread so we all learn.
