where do you buyyour riser wood?
« on: February 01, 2011, 05:41:00 PM »
getting readyu to make my first glass laminated r/d longbow. I bought my form from a guy who modeled his bows after a morrison r/d longbow having a 26" riser from fade out to fade out. When I placed my order with Bingham Projects, they said that they only have riser material for longbows in 18" then I checked 3 rivers and they only carry 17". Just wondered where you all got your supplies. This is first time for me, so I appreciate any help you can give me. If I happen to find a place nearby that carries the wood I need should it be kiln or air dried or does it matter? Thanks!

I generally try to find 6/4 or 8/4 lumber in planks at least 24" long, 36" if I can, and in widths that are multiples of 2".    My risers are 18"x 2 x 1.5.   Those sizes let me get multiples, plus leaving some sanding thickness.   I can generally find what I want at Rocklers or Cross Cut Hardwoods.  You might have to find different hardwood outlets where you are.   I make it a practice to inspect all the wood whenever I go in and buy anything good, even if I don't need it right now.   If i get a sudden yen to build a particular bow, I have wood on hand.

Be wary of using the turning stock as it is not fully dried. It can warp after you cut it  :(  .

Perry the way it's dried doesn't matter as long as it's dry. You can get the wood from any hardwood source. You may have to glue up sections to get what you need.

hello eagleone, I saw that you know of two wood suppliers in Indiana. I am looking to find someone who has a larger variety of riser wood. If anyone has any suppliers it would be appreciated.

Eagleone, I am looking for more of the exotic wood risers for take down recurves. I am new to building take down recurves and recently have been using Bocote however I seem to have problems finding the size. Preferably I would like to find woods on the larger side of 2"x4"x20" or 2"x2"x20"

Go on Texas Bowhunter.com and talk to Ruby Dog.  I get all my wood from him.  Many many different woods of great quality and you simply cannot beat his prices.
Now then, get your weapons ~ your quiver and bow ~ and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.  Gen. 27.3

If you want to order a few pieces at once, I like this place.  gilmerwood.com  They have a $100 min order but pretty much have everything and pics of the actual wood your buying.

I was just looking on Kennym's website yesterday and he's got some dang good prices on riser blanks. Awesome actionwood colors, I love that desert camo! If I ever get to the point where I can build a laminated one piece longbow, that's what it will be made of.

LL Johnson in Charlotte , Mi has more varietys of wood than I have ever seen. I have been around wood/composite bows for 15 years and seen wood there I never have before. Good prices from what I could tell. They have a web site, but I dont belive you can order from it. You will have to call them.
