Hickory backed hickory help
« on: February 21, 2011, 06:12:00 PM »
My wife wants me to make us matching bows. I have not yet made one bow but have some hickory lumber and backing strips and have watched Mr Torges video a couple of hundred times.  I have the tools and access to bandsaw and even planer.  I need a starting point on thickness in order to get her a bow at about 30 lbs at her 25". About a 62" bow or so.

If anyone has some sugestions they can post here or pm me.
Thanks,
Brant

1/2" core and a 1/8" or less backer about 1 3/8 wide. Being that light I would straight taper from the fades to 3/8 wide tips. Glue a 10" handle section dead center and have fun! Just my .02 cents.

Pearl sounds about right to me. HBH isn't hard to work. I wish I had glued in some deflex on mine though.
Good luck,
Stan
