tip overlay MIA

Hey guys, I am looking for a little info here.  My nephew just bought a Pearson recurve.  He has seen me shooting my long bows and my 2 boys shooting their recurves and got bit by the bug.  He is only 12, but super strong for his age.  He bought a 47# Pearson recurve used with hopes I would make him a string and he could start shooting with us.  I got the bow and seen the tip.  BAD NEWS.

The overlay on the tip is missing.  Nothing but fiberglass on one end.  There is not any damage to the glass and no harm to the bow that i can see.  I am not a bowyer, but really would like to be able to fix it up for him.

Is there a certian wood I need to use?  Which glue?  I can mold the wood to the glass and glue it on then finish it, but I don't know which materials to use.  This broke the kiddos heart when he found out about it, so I would like to fix it up pretty quickly for him.

Is there a supplier out there that I could buy enough wood to do an overlay or would i have to buy a large amount of material?

If the tip is not damaged and only the overlay is missing you can make a new overlay and put on the bow and seal it with varnish.  I would try to find a wood working store they usually have small pieces of exotic woods and you can pick one similar to the piece on your bow.  Mask the limb and clean the area where the old overlay was make a overlay to match the existing one but probably a little wider.  I would also flair the wide end similar to the on on the bow so you dont have to sand it after it is glued on the bow.  You can use super glue or epoxie to attach the overlay.  I would not use a 5 minute as I do not believe they have the holding strength of a 2 hour epoxie.  When the glue has set for about 24 hours sand the overlay to match the tip and couture it like the one on the other end.  It should be sealed with a varnish or true oil.  Hope this helps

On a recurve especially, take your time and make a good fit overlay to glass. Also rough the glass up ,I use 40 grit.

I have used 2 ton epoxy, CA and Smoothon for overlays. If I'm in a hurry on my own stuff(always) I use CA,have never had one come off.

The one overlay I had come off was on the first bow I made, antler, I think the porous antler sucked up the glue and starved the glue joint.It was 2 ton epoxy,but don't think it would have mattered,the antler looked like a dry joint when it came off.

You might want to bevel the end that blends into the glass to a fairly sharp edge to ease sanding in later.

If you are wanting to do it yourself then take the advice already given for the repair, but if you think it's too much of a complicated process then I'd suggest taking Pearl Drums up on his offer.

I have put overlays on myself pairing up Rosewood to Osage and it turned out real nice, first time, beginners luck, whatever you wanna call it?
But it really wasn't all that difficult.
Who knows, you might discover that you have a knack for this sort of thing and start building some bows?   :rolleyes:

just got back to town.. I found some black fiberglass, black phenolic and some walnut diamondwood to send you..enough to fix a few tips. I also found some nice thin black phenolic, sand the shiney stuff off of both sides of the thin phenolic before you use it. I would use the walnut diamondwood on top and file thru it to get to the phenolic..I use chainsaw files to cut the string grooves in the tip materials. PM me your mailing adress and I will send it out. in the bow tip pictured I used 030 white glass, black phenolic ,030 white glass and a 020 piece of wood veneer, I filed thru the wood and white glass down to the phenolic for the string grooves.

I used black glass,white glass, black phenolic and a 025 wood veneer on this bow tip.. I assume the bow you are repairing takes a B50 string?? if it does I think you can just glue two pieces of glass on the tip and sand and file to shape
