Red Oak Board Bow
« on: March 29, 2011, 07:17:00 PM »
Just finished this Red Oak bow with the help of 4est build along. I did change some of the dimensions here are my specs   "

 7 1/4 Brace, 68"ttt, 9" riser, 4 1/2" handle, 2" fades, 1 3/4wide to 1/2" tips. Full 1/2" thick for the entire length of the bow   "
Got me a junk store bathroom scale and got some approx. weights

40# @ 28
45# @ 29
47# @ 30
    "
My full draw is 30" it seems to be holding up so far, coming up on 200 shots. Top limb is stiff not working much past the riser. Need some help please

I got a corner full of busted selfbows this is the first bow that I have made that has lasted past 25 shots some less.

Thanks for looking, Crg

Thats a great piece of work from an oak board. Nice profile as well. I see the stiff spot you spoke of on the upper limb. Its about mid way to the tip, I wouldnt sweat it. Shoot it!

It does look good and Red oak is an inexpensive way to get bow material if you cannot cut your own. Looks good

Wow, that's a very fine looking bow!  Both the braced and full-draw profiles are spot-on.  Excellent work all the way around.  Thanks for sharing!

I like the little accents in the riser. are those thin strips of walnut by chance?

For what its worth.....I've built 4 or 5 of these red oak bows.Via.bow build along.I have used dry wall tape to back all of them.4 layers of tape with tite bond 111 over each layer. After that I purchased some synthetic snake skin to put over the tape & It has served well with all of the bows I made.Shot the heck out of all of them. The drywall tape leaves little dimples(close to the texture of snake skin)And it actually feels like snakeskin.I will post a pic.

In my own opinion I would not feel comfortible shooting a bow that I built out of red oak with out backing it with something.I believe I have about 20.00 in this bow- wood & all.
