I hear Drummand Island is one of the best places.  Maybe somebody else can either confirm or deny that.

Like Ron said on the other site Mio used to be a good spot.  My dad used to hunt them there.  But that is north of Houghton Lake.

Some friends of mine used to hunt them somewhere up by Wolverine but I couldn't tell you where.  You might try the DNR up that way I bet they could help you.

Used to hunt them just south of Traverse City not so long ago  but I cant say whether that is still good.  I was pleasantly surprised just a few days ago to see my first up close snowshoe hare here in Iowa, might have to go sneaking around to find some to hunt now that I know they are here as well.

Eric, I don't know if you remember years ago when Jud and I came up there to hunt snowshoes. We stayed in the old hotel in Manton. We hunted some pine plantings nearby and it was full of rabbits. I had Gypsy an old Bluetick hound and she ran them so fast that they'd cross the lanes between the pine rows so quick you couldn't get a shot off.

Ron your making me feel old, yes I do remember that, those were the days eh! Between the cedar swamps and the christmas tree farms it was no problem finding them. The dogs would sing until they were hoarse!

Been several years ago, but we used to get them on state land East / Southeast of Gladwin.  Also up around the Meredith area (north of Gladwin).

There are pockets of swamps, and young jackpines that hold some Hares, but they are hard to find.

As someone already mentioned, some areas that used to be full of Hares are now void of any sign.

The only place I could suggest is the area known for Kirtlands Warbler nesting, found off M-33
between Rose City and Mio. There are a few in those Jackpine thickets, and you won`t run short of land to roam.

I can't really say much as I have been away for a long time. . . but hares use to be my favoirte critter up there in north country.  I am not sure how it still applies, but snowshoes were known for going through biological cycles (I think it is 7 year cycle).  You have to catch them on the upswing. . . does anyone still know if this holds true and if so, where in the cycle are you.  Could be on the down swing right now.  Makes all the difference.

i dont know for sure where they stand at this point...i think all bunnies go in cycles..... and if they get too thick disease can knock some out... ive read that the coyotes knock of the snowshoes pretty good... but im sure its all about habitat...i jumped one deer hunting west of harrison a couple years ago...i think if you find the right pockets..youll get into them just like the cottontails...

Well bring snoeshoes. With the rain last Sunday on the old snow and then 10" of new snow on top of that, it's hard walking in the woods right now. Hard on short legged dogs to

State land areas west of Higgins Lake in the LP - Take the Military Road exit go west a mile and you are there. It has been a few years since I have been there though.
