First TD Recurve. Have questions...
« on: April 15, 2011, 09:07:00 PM »
Ok. My first Td recurve. Have the limbs (hard rock maple) rough shaped and the riser (bubinga) angles cut.

When I'm ready to cut the rough riser shape which side do I do first. The up and down with the window cutout, or the side profile. it seems to me no matter which one I do first, I wont have a flat surface to trace my template, or bandsaw out the pattern.   :dunno:

Just in need of a little guidance. Thanks.

I never built any bows, but when cutting out a decoy it works well if you cut either profile in 1~ONE piece& then ya can use 2 sided tape to hold it back in place to give a square/ flat surface cut out the other way. Hope this helps.

thats a good tip- will be using that.
i may be wrong here but i would cut the side  profile out first - its a bigger bigger cut, then trim the others by hand,
a.holding against the bandsaw,
b.using a hacksaw, or tenon saw or japanese pull saw would be the best, and
c.rasping and filing.to give the final profile.
g'luck
