Hi,

I glued up a Bamboo backed Bamboo, with a bulletwood core of about 1/16th. Used some reddish looking hardwood flooring as powerlams (2 of the either side of the bulletwood), don't know what is is, but it's nice looking stuff. This is my 5th bow, hopefully it will hold up. Waiting for TB3 to dry is like watching grass grow...... Off to church now, will post pics later....

Cheers

Ok,

I've unwrapped the innertubes and I got quite bad glue lines at the fades, even though I seriously clamped them up, I also sanded the powerlams paper thin. What do I use to fix this up? CA glue?

Thanks

Pete

I've heard of warm epoxy with flow better into cracks

I would love to know the secret of good glue lines at the intersection of the fade and power lam.

Hi Guys,

I've fixed the bad glue joints at the fades with heated epoxy. Istuck the riser on with epoxy. The tips are on with string grooves cut. I've sanded the rind off the back and belly. I stcuk it on the tiller tree with the long string and now I have a bow that is 65# at 4inches of movement. It's 1 1/2 inches wide at the fades, so I was thinking of reducing it to 1 1/4 or 1 1/8, how Much weight would that remove?

Thanks

Peter (I''l take some pics tomorrow afternoon and try post them)

Oh I was looking for a bow that was between 50 & 60# @ 27... I want it for hunting when I return to SA later this year.

Urac.....need say no more, but I will.
Fills gaps, good glue lines, dries hard as heck, and I haven't had any problems with it what so ever.

I use TB glues for wood to wood contact, but Urac for backings and everything else. That's some tuff stuff.

Hey Pete, just one last note.
You said you used inner tubes, ever try this?

I glued up a Hybrid R/D design on my caul using Osage and a Bamboo backing. Came out fine and I'm still shooting it. I could have used a stiffer caul form overlay, but hindsight is 20/20 right?
Anyway, with a harder cushion on my caul like a stiff rubber compound to soften the clamp squeeze on the boo nodes, I think this will be the ticket to making that next step into "Bowyerism" of all wood without the glass?
I'm about as far as I can go, or care to go, without using glass. My bows are still all wood and I finally reached Bear Grizzly velocities with a bow I made in my garage.

Here's the final pics of it.

Hey Semo,

I love your bow, and the caul you used. I followed the travelling caul thread. Maybe when I'm settled in SA, I can get onto the design list and make one of my own. This is my 5th bow and I'm learning tons, but if this one doesn't work, I might just buy one!!!!!

Thanks

Peter

Oh don't do that, keep trying Pete. It's not always easy, but you'll get the hang of it. Believe it or not, I'm not much of a wood worker as far as building furniture and such. But bow building doesn't seem that hard for me.
I guess some people just have a knack for it?

I think that cutting, splitting, and processing my own staves helps me understand the characteristics of the wood better and it helps in the actual bow making because I know what to expect. The bamboo was kinda different than what I was used to, but I followed Eric Krewson's Bamboo backing repair along and used it for my own glue up. I followed the process like he did it and mine came out fine.
Don't think that I haven't had my share of mishaps because I've had a couple take a dive on me with splinters and such but I haven't actually broke one yet. Knock on wood.LOL  :knothead:

Here's the thread that I used for my bamboo glue up, just skip the part about sanding the old boo backing off and skim over to the glue up.

Ok, This bow has come out way to heavy for me. At the moment it's sitting somewhere on the Atlantic in a container, but when it and I get to South Africa, I'm going to reduce the width, however I don't think this will be enough. As I got natural bamboo on the belly, will I be able to flatten the nodes and then scrape the belly? If it were going to weaken the limbs at the nodes, then would I be able to take enough off to then put a belly lam of say Gemsbok horn on?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Man you went way over my head on this one. If you had some pictures that you could post it would help get a better idea of what your working with. Pictures speak 1,000 words and would help alot in this case, cause I'm lost.
