Best path for cut Osage pole
« on: May 10, 2011, 01:26:00 PM »
I have cut my first Osage and need some clear advice to hopefully find success. The pole is about 12 feet long and heartwood is 2x3 inches big end and 2X2 inches small end. Fairly straight with some areas of concern. Ends are sealed with bark on, Log is whole.I have some real good photos if I can figure out how to upload them. I want to get the best utilization out of this wood for some hunting bows.

Well no luck on pics yet. How about just some idea of whether or not to cut pieces to rough size now or leave it to season with the bark on? I could store roughed out pieces (bark removed) in the house or with bark on I could store them in my garage. I would like ot have a bow out of this before October this year if possible.

First off cut the pole in half so you have two 6' pieces then saw each in half lengthwiseand tie them back together with small spacers in between to allow air flow. By tying them back together it will help prevent warping or twisting. I removed the bark on the ones I've done and left the sapwood intack. Seal the sapwood well with shellac then let them rest for a few month to dry.
You should easily be able to have a bow ready for October.

Really appreciate the info. I wondered about leaving sapwood on but you cleared that up. I like the idea of using one half to restrain the other. I have other osage, IPE, etc I can work on for a laminated bow while this is drying as a back up plan.
