which way skins
« on: May 11, 2011, 07:29:00 PM »
Well, I guess I have the million dollar question.Been following the treads about putting snake skins on and thought I had it understood right up until I started laying them out. Does the head go towards the riser on each limb or vise versa??? I have thin limbs so width is not an issue. Thks Jim g

Unless of course it's a road kill snake that's all smashed up and you can no longer tell which end is the tail and which end was the head.

Don't ask how I know this.

Beanbag look at the pattern of your skins and put them on how ever you want. Most folks do it the way pearl said bit really I don't see how it would matter.

I do it like Pearl especially if it's a rattler with some nice coon tails.

I do it that way because of the way the pattern naturally narrows with the limb width.

I was just being silly before cause I did use road kill snakes to skin a bow, but as Sticks and Pearl said you can tell which way is which if you look at the size of the scales. The smaller scales will be toward the tail and the larger ones toward the head, with the largest scales being right in the middle. If your using rattle snake skins, by all means put the tail end toward the tips and the head toward the handle. I got a nice pair 37" long diamondbacks with awesome coon tails on them that I just can't wait to use! Since my bows are never over 64" long or so, these will be plenty to cover the entire back of the bow.

Plus the tail end of the snake is a nice black color. Looks cool on the tips.

I'll have to post some pics when I get them done.Just ordered a smaller set of diamond back from Mike. The limbs are really narrow and would be a big waste of his standard skins. Thanks Jim G. ps,Semo, i've been known to put some road kills to good use also!!lol
