Can you just glue on a grip to a flat stack?
« on: May 19, 2011, 10:36:00 PM »
Hi,

If making a flat or even a r/d longbow can you just glue a riser/grip section to the belly of the stack?

Or do you have to situate the riser/grip in between the lams.

I guess I'm worried the grip section might just "pop" off.

Seems it would be a whole lot easier.

I saw this bow at 3rivers and it got me thinking....

Thanks

with all wood bows yeah. like the bow you have in the pic. the risk of it popping off is reduced by stacking a few laminated pieces instead of just a block of handle wood. heres one i'm doing now. glueing several pieces together will reduce the risk of the handle popping. also you don't want a bend thru the handle design. i don't know about glass bows. don

As long as the handle area doesn't bend when drawn you will be OK. A power lam between lams will prevent the handle area from bending.

I think your belly wood needs to be thick enough at the handle that you can extend your fades into the belly wood. If the belly slat is thin and the fades end at the belly surface, pop-off is more likely.
