Never used a yard stick, but I have whipped out a couple pyramid bows from a 4' x 1/4" x 1" red oak lath that Lowes carries...  :)

I've also got a friend who made a bunch of youth bows out of 1" PVC.  They turned out really well and are pretty much indestructable.  He glued a 6" piece of dowel inside the pipe in the grip area and made string nocks....done!  :)   Not a very traditional material, but a good project if you have a bunch of kiddos wanting bows.

Never thought about the yard stick thing Shakes, but I'll tell ya about a brain storm I did have the other day.

I cut a little over 4 dozen cane shafts last Thursday while on a fishing trip an hour south of my place. It was a two fold trip, catch fish, and cut cane but the fishing stunk. However the cane did not disappoint at all.
While I was sizing up the extra long cane sections to about the length and diameter I wanted for arrow shafts to bundle up for drying, I got to thinking. Why couldn't you tie a couple of these 4-5 foot sections of cane together and make a bow? You could add more stalks of cane for more weight, or take away for youngins. You wouldn't even need string nocks persay, just tie the string off on each end with a slip knot on one end and a timber hitch on the other after you get the amount of bend in it that you like.

Of course it would be better if they were dry and not green for doing this, but you know Wally World sells finished cane poles and two of them cut in half would be enough for 2 bows.

Then as far as the taper goes, just turn one of the cane sections opposite the other one so you have a small end and a big end on each tip. Effectively making it an even pull from tip to tip. I bet it would work for a kids bow or even for a survival bow if you were ever put in that situation.

I believe someone did just that with a bundle of cane in the Traditional Bowyers Bible.  I think it was Tim Baker but might be mistaken.  Just cannot remember which volume.

Right on Philthy Phil. It was Tim Baker. He used twine to hold it all together I believe.  ;)  I have an oak hand rail    with absolute perfect grain    I thought about whipping a bow up with?  :dunno:  Maybe it would be a dang fine bow?    One way to find out for sure! Give it a run !  ;)
