beech-wood board bow
« on: July 12, 2011, 06:35:00 PM »
I got this wood from a friend of my uncles and I wasnt sure if it would make a bow so I tried it and I think it turned out very well I tried doing a search for beech wood bows on here but didnt find any so this might be a first. it is 72" tip to tip 1 1/2" at mid limb tapering to 1/2" nocks it pulls 40# @ 31" and it has very little set as you can see. I made a leather handle stitched with deer skin and a leather arrow shelf with a felt strike plate. I also put in some pics of the shooting I did and this is good shooting for me condidering they are lumber store dowels with duct tape for fletching and 38 cases for points(I always try and do things on the cheap side but still function good as well), I know alot of you guys are alot better shots than me but I thought this was good also it has a home-made flemish string. I love making bows anyway let me know what you guys think and thank you for any comments

Someone posted a few months ago that beech is a pretty good bow wood. Can't remember the exact post.
Nice bow by the way!

That is very nice and the shooting ain't too bad either. I have a beech stave that twisted like crazy when I split it. I roughed one bow out and had trouble heating the twist out. Looking at that I think I might see how it does now that it is a little more seasoned.

:D    I was going to ask the same thing. Great job otherwise. Tiller looks awesome. 72" is no joke. I bet that 40#'s shoots like 50.

it would be hard for me to tell you how to do it maybe I will do some pics of the duct tape fletching. I dont always do duct tape only on the arrows I stump shoot with all my hunting arrows has real feathers. but I buy a roll of camo duct tape from wally world for $2 and that is a heck of alot cheaper than real feathers. so I pull off 6 pieces of tape about 5 inches long then I'll have to show pics for you to see how its done or look on youtube

Great looking bow! First I've heard of someone  using beech wood. Tiller looks great. I'll be looking for that duct tape fletching video. My son is really into making a lot of stuff out of duct tape. He made me a wallet the other day and I was really surprised how functional it was.

ok here is duct tape fletching pics I hope they make sense to you first like I said I cut or tear off 6 pieces of tape

then I will take one piece of tape and go down from the nock about one inch and lay the tape on the shaft so its parallel to the index tab on the nock and I do this on both sides of the shaft

and then I will keep doing this process for the other two fletchings. I tried to think of a way to tell you what I was doing but I cannot so I will just show some pics and hope that gives you an idea or you can check out some vids on youtube.

now you can cut the fletching to 5 inches

and finalally you shape it with scissors to the shape you want it

I hope this helps I done the best I could
