Limbs warping.
« on: August 05, 2011, 03:01:00 PM »
I was well into tillering my new bow when I noticed that both limbs were becoming warped to the right. When I hold it up in my shooting hand I can see the tips are offset by at least 1/2".
Is there anything I can do to bring it back into line?

Check your thickness on each side. I had this happen when I did my first board bow and it was because i let one side of the limb become thinner than the other.

Then again I am new at this so someone else may have a better idea!

adeeden, is right. Make sure your wood removal is even. The stave twists toward the weak side so remove wood from the other side.  The weak side is closest to the string when strung. Jawge

Thank you both. Does this hold true for a laminated bow as well? I'm building a R/D bamboo backed jatoba with a planed bamboo belly. Is it safe to assume that the strong side is the side it's warping towards?

I just measured the offset. The upper limb has moved 1/8" to the right while the lower limb has moved 1/2" to the right. It's mostly noticeable in the last 3rd of the limb.

Thanks anyway,Jawge. I tried removing wood on the strong side and it's still badly warped. I'm going to try one last thing that will make or break it. Tomorrow,I'll take the torch to it and try to heat it back into shape. If the glue lets go it won't matter because it won't be a shooter if I can't get it straight.
Dave.
Next time I'll choose my core wood more carefully.  :knothead:
