Advice on what grain tip to use??
«

I am trying to decide what grain field tips/BH's would work well for my arrow set-up. I have Sitka Alaskans 29" with 3 5" feathers. I am shooting 58# @28" with my recurve.
This is my first attempt at setting up traditional arrows so I would greatly appreciate any advice I can get.
Tks

Depends on your draw length. I'm sure someone other than me can make a recommendation after you provide that information.

I'll reply just because nobody else has.
I don't know anything about the spine-deflection of the Sitka.
You will need to shoot one without any feathers at a soft target.Start about 5-8 yards and shoot 10 times.Take the average of what that tells you.
If your shafts strike nock left they are weak and nock right are stiff. There is also a lot of things that can come into play to confuse you if you have never done this before.Things like your nock being too low. This will cause the arrow to bounce off the shelf and give a false reading. If you have never bare shafted any arrows read all the old posts, give it a try and get back to us on specific questions.

I see your arrows are already cut, so just start with a 125gr point and go up or down as needed.
When your arrows are flying good then use a broad head with the same weight. The broad head will tell you how good your set up is. Do NOT SHOOT the BH with a bear shaft. Good luck and have fun.

Thank you for the advice. I am going to shoot tommorow afternoon. Hopefully I have some good news to report when I get back.
I bought the combo fieldtip pack from 3rivers that has 100-250grn points. I'll start with the 125's and go from there.
Tks again

I just wanted to add that the above is for a right hand shooter.
You can start bareshafting close but a tuned bareshaft will shoot well at 20 yards or more.
Keep in mind you can only bareshaft as good as you can shoot.New archers sometimes have form or release problems that will really show up on a bareshaft.Whatever distance you can shoot a tight group with feathers is probably the bareshaft distance limit.

Jason; I just bought the test kit from 3 rivers too; but its described as:
The perfect solution for arrow tuning at a great price. Each test kit comes with two-each of our precision 11/32" glue-on field points. You'll get: 2-100 grain, 2-125 grain, 2-145 grain, 2-160 grain, and 2-190 grain points.
No mention of 250 grn points.
I am hoping the largest of the points is 190; to match the grizzlies I am getting..

Brian:
I have all screw-in tips up to 250grns. I am not sure if they offer different kits mine is the 5/16 size.

Yeah, the screw-in points go up to 250 grains.
Brian, the biggest field points in the 11/32 kit from 3 Rivers is 190 grains (I have the same kit). Even though they don't list 190 grain field points anywhere else.

But with the screw on points it's harder to align the grain of the arrow shaft with all those extra grains in the tip.
