Fair price on old Bear Kodiak Magnum?
« on: August 23, 2011, 12:29:00 PM »
I stopped by a pawn shop yesterday and they had an old Bear Kodiak recurve 45# with $250 price tag on it.  I looked it over real well looking for scratches, dents, etc.  It was in decent shape.  On the back of the top limb there are a few scratches/gouges about 6 inches down from the tip.  But to me they didnt look deep enough to cause failure.  The tips are scratched up a little but nothing too bad.  I told the guy it wasnt worth $250 and i offered him $150 for it and he said he would take it.  Do you guys think this is a fair price for this bow?

And to give you an idea of how old the bow is, the bow has Bear Kodiak written in a weird light greenish color and the rest of the bow is green.
I just found out that it is a Bear Kodiak Magnum (Glass Powered) has Greylind, Michigan written on it. This website,  http://www.stickbow.com/stickbow/Collector/beararchery/,  says it was made between 1961-1977 and is 52".

Thanks ahead of time for any help!
K.C.

When it comes to money it varies by individual. If it was worth that much to you then it was a fair price. If the bow didn't have any limb twist and such I would say excellent buy but, I am biased to Bear bows.  :)

thanks for the reply!

Here are some pics.  I am thinking about using this bow for bow fishn so it not being new and having scratches will make me not worry about scratchn it up while using it.  Sorry that some of the pics arent too clear.

Here are the scratches/gouges I was talkn about.

This last pic shows a scratch/gouge in the belly of the upper limb.  The very lower tip of the gouge is the deepest and it goes into that first layer of the bow (i guess its fiberglass on belly and back?).  I dont feel like its enough to cause the limb to fail though.  What do you all think?

KC, To me it looks too scratched up to hold that value. I tried  a similar bow for bowfishing and could not tune the arrow to shoot straight into the water. I think it is because of the short length and my release.

Pawn shops have been the worst place for me to find a bow they always want too much.
I purchased one from a local guy here in pristine condition for $75 .
Like stated above it depends on what the money means to you. Maybe you can rescue it.

In my opinion you did fine. Its a classic. I think those scuffs and scratches are cosmetic. I think its a real looker with that green riser. I think it would kill any animal on the North American continent if not the earth. Maybe you wouldnt make any significant money on a re-sale but I'd be fine with $150 for that bow for myself as a hunting bow.

Think you did alright - $150 is right in the ballpark for one in that condition.  I've seen them bring more than that on one of the "auction sites".
Enjoy the hunt!  - Mitch

Took my first deer with a bow just like that,,, to me today & years after the bow is gone, it would be worth it to me.

I recently paid $175 TYD for mine, which is identical to yours.
