Are decals for Shakespere Super Necadah avail?
« on: September 01, 2011, 11:24:00 AM »
I have a 40# Super Necadah that I picked up (used, obviously) and it's a real joy to shoot. Could use some cosmetic clean-up, though. I'm also looking at a 45#er that is also "less than perfect". I hesitate to have it refinished if that means losing the original decals. Do any of you refinishing magicians have access to the decals?

Blade',
Not on target, but my first bow was a Super Necedah at 45#. Before deer knew about FOC and single bevels, it shot completely through a couple whitetail bucks.  Your post brings back sweet memories of "the sunny slopes of long ago."
Enjoy

I haven't hunted the 40#er yet, using my 50# custom made RC instead. However, I'm looking at a 45# Super Nec that I definitely would hunt. Love that short 54" maneuverability.

im sure you can find a sign or hobby shop that could replicate the decals. a quick google search should get you the images.

you do know anytime you start a thread about a bow , you have to post pics right? forum rules :rules:

Need to go open our gun club now. I'll put some up later tonight. Nice little bow. Just been ridden hard and put up wet a few times before I got it.

My wife still has her Super Necedah 40# that she got in 1970.  Had no problem killing a nice mulie doe with it even with her 26" draw.

For a while I had a 45# Super Necedah but it stacked too much for my draw length.  I sold it but wish I hadn't with all the young shooters coming up in the family.  :(

Not sure what collector value these bows have and how it would change with replacement decals, but you might want to check around.

I'm still shooting the Super Necedah that my wife bought for on our first Christmas in 1971.  That said, it was looking a little worn and I had just learned how to make decals on the pc and printer so I went ahead and refinished the bow, made new decals, and installed them.  Surprise, surprise, the stuff I use makes great decals on a white background but they don't show up on a black background.  A call to the supplier of the decal paper confirmed they know of no way to make a decal show on black.  HOWEVER, with a little practice I've found that one can make the decals, then while still on the paper and not yet topcoated with varnish go over them with gold paint in a draftsman's pen.  Then topcoat the decal and install in the normal manner.  So there you go.  It can be done, but it's very time intensive.  BTW the originals are not decals.  They were silk screened.  I don't know how to do that without a very expensive professional slik screen machine.

Dave, silk screen "starter" packs can be had for around $30 at hobby/craft stores or online.  The process is not terribly tough past copying the logo onto emulsion/hand painting resist.
Most kits come with enough ink for 2 dozen or more tshirts, and the silk screen itself is reusable.

Dave, got your email. I wonder if I could photograph the decals and then get someplace to copy that onto the bow limbs. On the other hand I guess gold on the black wouldn't look bad at all. Not original, but might look really regal. It's not like I'd be altering a near mint 62 Bear.  I draw 29 3/4, but the bow seems to be able to handle that without stacking too much. Sure is a smooth shooter even over-drawn that badly. I haven't put a scale on it at that draw, but it sure flips an arrow out there like it means business. I have too many bows and have to put some up for sale, but I'd like to keep this one. Not a lot invested and not of great value on the used bow market, but just plain fun. Hova, finally got around to posting pics.

Oh, you have a "new" one!  That riser was not used initially.  They were just two pieces of zebra around a center of (I think) shedua.  I pull 30 1/2" and there is no stack at all.  It justs shoots smooth and straight.  That's why I named it Sweetness.

Mike, we have silk screens and have t-shirts and art work, but it is a process of hand drawing on the screen.  I got thinking last night that I could put a picture of the decal under the screen and then paint on the resist.  Kind of like a negative of painting the gold onto the decal.  Are you suggesting that there is an inexpensive way I can prep the screen using a computer and not just my shaky hands?  I'd really love to screen the logos back on rather than decal them.

Actually, Dave- there is a silkscreen "machine" of sorts- called Yudu- made by the people that make the Cricut machine.  I have seen it at Michael's, and maybe at Hobby Lobby.  I think it has the ability to take a jpeg from the computer and cut it into emulsion.  Then its just a matter of binding the emulsion paper to the screen.

I have hand drawn and cut emulsion to screen print, and I prefer the emulsion.  If you keep it well, you only have to make the emulsion once, and can use it for years.  I have not had such luck with the hand painted silk.

For hand drawing, you have the right idea.

Is this the logo you want redone?

Dave- after reacquainting myself with silk screening a bit, I found loads of videos on YouTube where people just use paper-backed sign vinyl stuck to the screen, seems pretty easy.  The design is cut in the vinyl using a Cricut in the vids I just watched, but if you go to a sign maker, they could cut you some vinyl for a nominal (I'm sure) fee seeing as it is a small logo...

Mike,
Your picture didn't show up, but you probably have the right one.  There are actually two logos.  One is a deer head that says Super Necedah below it and the other is a bent bow that says Shakespeare.

You had be kind of excited there for a minute.  My wife has a Cricut, but I don't believe it'll cut anything except the pictu

res on their cartridges.  Next step however, is that I have a cousin who is a sign painter and can make the vinyl signs.  Seems I may have go see him!  Thanks for the ideas.

Ron, I'll keep you informed if I make any progress.  Who knows, perhaps we'll be able to silkscreen your bow at the Kalamazoo show in January.

Sounds good Dave. I want to go. It will be my first time to any bow event. I've been working pretty much alone and playing sponge on the TradGang site. It'll be great to shoot with others (and play sponge).

Mike, that logo appears to be yellow or gold. Mine is white, so maybe they used different colors over the years. Like I said, I'm not as interested in restoring to new as I am in just replicating the logos and restoring a really sweet-shooting little bow to a presentable state. My Lost Creek 62" is supposed to ship Monday and Chad said it came in right at 44# (I asked for 42 - 47) so the Shakespere probably won't get a lot of play. Just really fun to shoot.
