retiller ???
« on: September 14, 2011, 04:29:00 PM »
I have been shooting selfbow I finished up a month ago. It shoots right where I look. ????? The tiller is off "slightly" on lower limb now. I really like how it shoot. (Maybe better than all the bows I have made over 35 years). Should I retiller or leave it alone.. Hate to change the way it shoots in any way !  What would You do ???

I'd leave it alone. If its shootin good that is really all that matters. I have several bows that have a horrible looking side profile at brace height but they shoot great with very little handshock so that tells me the limb strain and timing is pretty even. Just my 2 cents.

Tiller on the lower limb being slightly off at this stage only means that it'll get progressively worse the more you shoot the bow. If you don't want to retiller then try shooting your bow with slightly more hand pressure to the upper limb. Store your bow with the upper limb down. Over time, the upper limb will pick up more moisture, with the lower limb becoming a little drier.......Art

I'm with okie, leave it as is if it's shootin' good.

Art, how can you be certain of putting more hand pressure on the top limb? Would you raise the nocking point and pull down slightly to anchor?

How about a brace picture and a full draw picture?

Say you normally use a low wrist grip Red, and then switched to a medium or straight grip, this would shift the hand pressure. And also the strain on each limb. Will effect timing/balance somewhat. But over time should help level tiller back out.

Another option would to stress the upper limb further than the lower limb by chocking up on it and pulling until you get the desired results. Basically you're just evening the stress back out to both limbs. Tiller moved because of uneven stress anyways........Art

Like I said this is one of the best shooting bows I ever made... I'd hate to mess it up in any way! Thanks for all your responces. I wonder how much Native American put into tillering? I bet it was what was needed to get a bow to shoot well. Time was a big factor in the busy lives.
