Bow number 2

[Wingless Arrow]

So i just recieved my 2 osage bow staves today! they look great, except for a few knots, but what can you do. I have been admiring all the beautiful takedown bows these guys have been posting. My staves are really short, 39" to be exact, and i was wondering if i could attach them to a riser, in a takedown fashion. i know you dont make the limbs in the same way, but is this possible? If not what would you suggest i do to get the most out of my short staves?

or get a takedown sleeve from 3 rivers or mike yancey to make a 2 piece takedown. a word of caution on these sleeve type bows. make sure the come with 2 brass sleeve butts it makes it much simpler to let the bow tell you which limb is to be the bottom limb. then you can make the top limb permenent to the outer steel sleeve with a brass pin. im a firm believer in this avenue of aproach. rv

yeah, i thought about that, but i was thinking more along the lines of a 3 piece. i really like the look of the handles. Do you guys know if it is possible? or if it just wont work? or your not sure? because i think i might just give it a shot. the worst that could happen is i will end up z-splicing them together if it doesnt work.

You are only limited by your imagination and skill. Personally after 6 bows that shoot I dont think I'd take on something like that. Crawl, walk (me), run and that seems more of a full on marathon. But if you think you can hadle it go for it.

I completely see where you are comin from nim-rod, and i would follow your advice in most other cases. but i always like to experiment, and push the envelope, even if its my first try at something. so i think im just gonna have to go for it and hope for the best. Thanks to you all!

i have seen a bow like you are suggesting- here on the gang- i will just have to look a little.

I would go for it Wingless Arrow. I had a board bow break about 5 inches above the fade. (red oak with osage on front and back of handle) Cut the limbs off, got a bezel kit, and made a 3 piece takedown. shot a few times then raised another splinter. Another one of my newbie mistakes at the time. However, I learned more from that bow than any other to this point.

Well, I went for a 2 piece recently and wound up making a 1 piece out of it.  Being my first it just may end up a fire piece.  I'd say try what you want if you can eat the cost if it doesn't work out.  Me, I keep looking at my bow and praying something shootable comes out of it.  Good luck.  If you don't try you'll never know...

I have seen several three piece take downs from all wood, thought they looked pretty cool. I say give it a try but when experimenting don't get to attached to the bow.
Some consideration...Mounting the limbs requires drilling into/through the limbs,and violating the back. This could cause issues in a selfbow (the 3 piece takedowns i saw were boo backed)
Another issue is that the riser section will take up a certain portion of the overall bow length. After you cut the limbs to length there probably won't be enough left for a Z splice or a 2 peice takedown.
Just a few thoughts, hope it helps. I'm not trying  to discourage or be negative, just thinking at some point in the project you will be committed to a 3 piece.   Hope it works out.
