Bow for a friend's little girl?
« on: February 21, 2008, 03:54:00 PM »
Hey y'all, I have a friend and co-worker whose little girl has shown and interest in traditional archery.  She's been shooting a little fiberglass bow that he got from one of those unmentionable big chain stores, but it's already too small for her and I'd like to help him get her something better.  She's also been using the top of a cardboard shoe box for an armguard.  Looks like she's dedicated, so I'd like to water this flower while it's still blooming.

Anyway, what would y'all recommend as a step-up bow for her? New or used - it doesn't matter?  She's 10 yrs. old.

I'm also trying to convince her dad to trash his compound and come on over to the bright side...it may just work.

Check out Mad Dog bows in the sponsors forum. He makes several models that may work for her.

I would look at Black Rhino bows.  Just got one for my daughter after all the ranting and raving I got here asking about them.  Looks like a big bow but build for kids.  Very fast shipping too.

I second both of the above choices but if it was my kid i would opt for the black rhino excellent service and with a return policy to boot hope this helps Delin

Check out the post "Complete Youth Set-Up Giveaway #1" in this site (PowWow).  She might just end up with a complete starter set.  All she needs is a mentor to recommend her -- hint! hint!  Might just lead Dad over to the "bright side" as you mentioned above.

Thanks, Mike.

At what age did you get your little girl shooting? I saw the picture of you and her in another thread.

My little girl will turn 3 in May, so it's time for me to start thinking about getting her involved.

The best bow I've picked up for my sons was the Bear Kodiak Cub. Great hand size. Most others we found to be too big. As for perfroemance. really shoots as well as any adult bow. Plenty to grow into.  As for quality will last forever. I at frist thought it was alil steep for a kids bow, but seeing them shoot it and really loving it well worth it. Compared to buying bowling balls for them much better value.

I have a thread on here called Kid Law...I'm 5 and this is my bow.
You can see pics of it.  It is a PSE 3 piece take-down Buckeye Jr.  It is 15lbs at 24"
But, they come in numerous poundages.  They are not that expensive, somewhere around $90 and they shoot well.
The good thing is they have been out for a while so if you want to go up, the limbs are easy to find.
I got it for my 5 year old to see if she will stick with it. Decent equipment, especially for a kid can mean all the difference.  Poor equipment can get them frustrated and they won't want to do (insert sport here) anymore.

I have a Jerry Hill "Chipmunk Slayer" L/B 44", 15# @ 18".  I would give it to the little girl.  All I ask is that it is past along when she is finished with it.  There is a lot of history in the bow and the little boy's (whose life was cut way to short) father asked only that the bow always be in the hands of someone that would shoot it.  Let me know.

That is a great thing to do Elksong. If you accept his offer, let me know NativeCraft so I can take her out of the giveaway I'm doing please.

Elksong & Vermonster,
That is a very generous offer.  I'm not sure what to do, as I'd certainly like for her to have a complete outfit if she were chosen in the drawing.  But, Mike has already offered an armguard so if I could get her some arrows made up we'd have her an outfit.

I don't know anything about the Jerry Hill bows - is it a recurve or longbow...and would 15# be appropriate for an 8 yr. old girl?

I can teach her to shoot, but I'm gonna have to let y'all guide me on the equipment selection.

Take a yardstick held in the center of chest and have the youngster clasp hands togather( not reaching) and measure end of middle finger on yardstick.Should be real close to the draw length needed.

The Chipmunk should be just about perfect for her. It's a longbow.
