Not sure what happened with this one
« on: October 10, 2011, 09:52:00 PM »
I decided to build a bamboo backed bow for a hog hunt i will be going on later this year. To make a long story short i glued up a piece of raw bamboo to a piece of bamboo flooring i cut and ground. Added some osage and bamboo for a riser and it didn't turn out as expected. I knew it would probably come out under weight and i planned on adding a osgae lam to it to get my weight back but i wasn't expecting it to look like this.

Not sure what happnened. I went back and checked my form to see if something was off and everything checked out ok. My question now is can it be saved? Can i go ahead and tiller this bow then add osage lams to it to get my weight back? If you can, what do i need to do as far as tillering. In the above pics the bow is braced at 4.5 inches and then drawn to 21 inches. As you can see its a mess but i haven't done any tillering yet and i'm way under weight. The left limb is the left in both pictures. I'm just confused. I mean to me in the first picture the left limb has a hinge which is more noticable in the second picture and the right limb is too stiff.
I'm not real sure where to start. I've never had one come out like this. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Looks stiff a few inches out of the fade on left side. scrape wood off belly where limb is not bending or straight on left side. may need to scrape some off entire right limb once left is bending right to even it out.  Does the bow have set when unstrung on left side?

What glue did you use and how long did you wait until stressing the bow? If it was a water based glue you have to wait for the wood to dry back out after absorbing the moisture from the glue and not just after the glue is dried.
Bamboo flooring is not made for bow building so attention to bending qualities is not a concern when it is made. It will make a good bow if you pay attention to how well it bends before glue up. Did you check each component to see if it was bending well and equal to it's counterpart before glue up?

I'm gonna work on the bow some here in a little while and see what heppens.

Pat, I used smooth on epoxy and glued it up thursday night and took it off the form sunday night. It looked fine in the form but who knows it may be firewood.

well i made some progress this afternoon and it looks alot better than it did yesterday. I'm gonna stop here for now and glue either hickory or osage to the belly to gain some weight then re-tiller. Here is a braced shot after some tillering.

I think getting it tillered so it is all bending the same. Then glue up some Osage on the belly. But I am guessing on this.

I agree with Kelly. You could easily add 10# by adding the osage on the belly but get it bending evenly and together first.
