Making Phenolic?
« on: November 15, 2011, 03:06:00 PM »
Does anybody make their own?  I'm wondering how it is done.  Would be fun to add that additional aspect of hand made to a bow.

Here ya go...took me thirty one and a half seconds to get it for ya.  I might have to try this myself. I had read about it being done this way years ago when making knife handles out of denim phenolic.  Thought about using it for tips and overlays on a bow but never got around to doing it.

Have fun and show us what you get done.

Thanks for that link!  Must confess, I did a lot of looking on Google with no luck and did not think of searching here on the board!  :banghead:

There are quite a few videos on YouTube for home made micarta, too.
Here's one to get you started:

Thanks, Nate! I think I'll try camo denim.  Got a couple of pairs of pant I "out grew" that would serve well.

In the you tube video he is using fiberglass resin. It will not work nearly as well as epoxy does and I would not recommend using it especially if the phenolic is to be used in a riser

I think I might have to make up some of this using heavy silk fabric.
Should be tougher than hell, methinks.
Anyone know of a supplier for phenolic resins-I do have Bow Grip 100 and other epoxies, but the real deal, if available in smaller amounts would be best.

man do you have any idea how many layers of silk you would have to lay up to make 1/4 incc phenolic.
You would need a slow dry epoxy for sure, Maybe something thinned so you could dip it. HMMM got my brain to working now. I bet a layer of black and then blue or red would make really neat sight window when ground down.

God bless you all, steve
