Decided to redeem myself by following 4est Trekker's build-along on the board bow. Went out the other day to lowes and found a very straight grained red oak 1x4x6. They didn't have any decent 1x4x2s for the riser, so I'm going to stop by home depot on the way to class tonight and check what they have in inventory, if not I'll stop by another lowes which is along the way.
So far i've cut the rough profile of the bow out with a skill saw (circular saw), my skills with the skill saw aren't too keen so I made sure to leave about 1/4" of wood to my line, i'll clean it up to the line later with my drawknife, surform, and rasps. Just waitin' on the riser, don't think i'm going to add the reflex tips yet as this is only my 2nd attempt at a bow. I just want to take it easy and be sure I can make a workable bow without any mess ups.
I sure hope I can redeem myself from my broken Osage self-bow. I'm surely going to get me a 1x1x2 to make Erick's tillering gizmo, since I don't have much experience with proper tillering.
Another side project I'm going to work on is making myself a flemish board out of a 2x4, and a tillering stick. Bought a 1x4x6 pine board with good straight grain and made the tillering stick with 1" groves all the way out to 32" (which is more than necessary).
So I'm coming along as a young bowyer!
