Went out yesterday scouting some hickories and maples for my future bow projects and found a boat load of suitable hickories big enough to make four bows out of (I could wrap both arms around them and give them a hug). Yesterday my shipment from three rivers came in with my flemish string and materials so today I'll be building myself a flemish splice string jig and make myself a tillerin' string. Can't wait for spring to harvest those hickories!

Randy if you can hold off till they start budding out the bark will be very easy to remove, good plan.
My biggest problem in picking,a,tree was looking,it over enough to avoid so many pin knots etc.

Today I've got a BB Cumaru bow almost to weight for a young boy in NC

Randy, Roy tells me it's best to harvest hickory in August or September. bark peels right off and there's your final ring. give him a pm, I'm sure he'd offer more input.

Yeah I've been reading that the warmer months are typically better to harvest whitewoods like hickory. My gut instinct has always told me winter time because the sap is down, but apparently it's not the case. I will definitely send him a pm.

I merely marked the trees with ribbon so I can find them again. I figure i'd harvest one or two per year so I'd have a steady supply. Surely I've got to wait 1 or 2 years for them to season though anyway.

These hickories really don't have many knots, there are a few pin knots which I will need to be careful with, but overall they are perfectly straight and good to go. The bigger ones have no knots at all. If I can get some pictures I'll certainly post em.
Thanks!

Today I finished up some Sitka Spruce arrows for the wife's new bow and then she shot it. Check out her form, I taught her how to shoot:) Sure is great having a wife join in what I love to do:)

Bow is quiet as hell and purty quick.

Man what a pleasant change from your ugly mug.

Spent the day building and installing some upper cabinets in the shop. I'll be glad when I get them finished. I need the storage space.

Spent the day in Columbia, Mo.
Our UBM booth managed to give away 400 PVC bows to kids and they each got to shoot 3 arrows.

Lot of happy kids when they heard they got to keep them.
