Finally had some time to work on the bows today...

Heat straighten this hackberry I've been working on.

Decided to puts some curve to the tips on this ash bow I have been shooting in.  Hope the tips don't mess it up.  Just had to try it.

Put a grip on this piece of ash that I just finished up.

Was a good day.

I like the looks of that osage Kip.  One of these days mine will be dry enough to try.

I cleaned up the snake skins last night after I got hone from work. Leaving now for another day of sawing and jackhammering. Yea!

I bought me a Mikita power hand planer yesterday, works slick as heck too. Will make boo and belly tapering a snap. The jointer always worried me of my fingers and too much wood removal.

Nice addition roy. Always nice when you get to add a new tool to the shop.

I understand Chris, Me too.... I hear DVS has a pink loin cloth also, is that true? LMAO

Hey Roy, I know this might sound like a dumb question, especially from a woodworker, but how would you plane bamboo with an electric hand planer? Do you clamp it upside down and use it as a jointer? Or do you somehow clamp the boo and run the planer over it?  :scared:

And also started rubbing tung oil into my 3rd long bow....it is a promotion gift for my father who is getting ready to make COL...I named it the O-6. 40# @ 28", 68" ....will post some pics when finish is complete..the limbs and riser actually match but the different lighting conditions make them look different.

Dave, I'll clamp the boo upside down, "belly side up", on a piece of padding like thin indoor/outdoor carpet. I'll start from the center of the handle and plane one limb, then reverse the bow and clamp it back down and do the other limb. I'll place the clamps on the end of the bow I am not planing at the time to hold it still and the weight of the planner will hold down the limb I am planning. I will still use the jointer to get the boo flat in the first place, but after the shape of the bow is cut out of the boo, it get's a little fragile to run across a jointer.

Diamondback, very sharp bow.

Nice Kip. You are a bow making machine and they just keep getting better.

Very nice kip.  The arrow is sweet too!

Thanks Roy. I'll give your method a try. It's a lot less scary than running a nearly finished boo back over a jointer.

I've got some stave bottoms from a couple of bows that might work backed. Would boo overpower Sassafrass?

Can you tell I'm running out of seasoned wood???

To be honest Kip, I can't see how a piece of boo 1/8th thick at the center tapered to 1/16th thick at the tips could overpower any wood. But I could be wrong.

I'm heading to the bow shop now 10 AM, prolly spend the entire rest of the day out there. Oh darn-nit:)
