finished work, and started to cut a trail into my new "honey hole".I found an awesome spot a little while ago, and am just getting set up for hunting season, which starts 1 june. this spot is on the other side of a 1km wide strip of blowdown- ( guess thats why the spot is so good.- no access!!)
just gotta get a good trail in and out so that i can walk it in the dark, without breaking my neck!

came home and split a round of sitka that a good friend had dropped off a few days ago

he was cutting it up for firewood- when he got into it a bit- he saw the quality, and thought of me.

i have a few of these rounds split now, but this is by far the nicest one.
  .

it is currently sitting at 22% mc. so i will saw it into slats, sticker it- and get ready to spin some shafts.

Thats a nice score. I see a lot of arrows coming from those splits.

wow that looks like some very straight stuff. I hope you do a build along turning that into small round dowels.

I also wonder if stika spruce can make a bow. I mean look at that tight grain. If I remember it is fairly dense also.

kelly, i did read somewhere where someone built a bow from spruce but it was 4" wide and about 7' long- but a cool experiment none the less.
i have a small dowelling machine that i bought from lee valley- that works amazingly well.
what i found with sitka, is that it is incredibly consistant- i run one shaft- if the spine is too low- i increase the diameter a few thou.- or vica - versa, and then they all come out the same within a few pounds either way.
so what happens is- one decides on the poundage- then you live with the diameter you get.
unlike the fir shafts i used to make, that you would get a range of spines from 30# to 90# from the same board- all exactly the same size!! go figure!!
i could do a build along if there is stuff people think they would wanna see.

I had my first experience with Hide glue and sinue. Stuff stinks, now I stink too and the job I did looks like it stinks. I am going to tell people it is "primitive" looking though, because they probably won't know what it should look like anyway.   :D   So how do you get the dead carcas smell off of your hands?

Put the 4th and final coat of tongue oil on the new BBO last night, put a 4th coat of tongue oil on a new flemish string jig I am making, dipped 6 cedar arrows in spar.

I got some sitka spruce off Wayne a year ago in a trade for turkey feathers. It's some very nice arrow wood.

fujimo,

You know folks on here would love to see what and how you turn you fire wood into arrows.

Pete you are right on that account but if you soak it in water you can take it all off and try again.
I would not I have never done the sinew thing yet but I want to.

I am putting the finishing touches on a poundage drop on a friend's bow. As he has gotten older the 68# bow he once liked has become impossible for him to use, the bow is 54# now.

His bow is a super snaky, copperhead backed osage bow. It has served him well in the past.

Here is a stone point kill he made with the bow.

Built a form for recurving staves and actually found a couple of good red oak boards at home depot started cutting one out gonna finish tomorrow.  Going to try to put about 3" of recurve on this one don't know if you can on board bows but I'm gonna try and see what happens.

I was lucky enough last year to get fujimo as my trade partner. He sent me some of his home spun shafts and this is what I did with them.
If you can't tell they were stained to mock my favorite rivercane shafts.

I want some more if you'd like to sell or trade some!!!!

My kids snakey Osage turned out to be not to bad when I looked at the sinue job I did Friday. There were a couple places on the edges that needed more ,so I patched these spots up. Now the waiting begins. The little bow is hanging up to dry and cure in my computer room for a couple weeks.

Finished my new bow and did some shooting with her. The draw weight is 55@27 and with the heavy forward riser the release is very smooth, almost like a recurve. The limbs are actionboo with bocote veneers. For the riser i used cocobolo with bocote and osage stripes.
