Any bowyers in NJ? - need help with Ragim takedown
« on: December 02, 2011, 03:47:00 PM »
Hi all,
Anyone with take-down bow building experience in the northen New Jersey area? I have only made some selfbows, but my sons Ragim Wildcat takedown recurve needs some help (has the matrix limbs but its the Wildcat riser). Its a lower end model that has the limbs bolted on with a single bolt, held in place with a plastic alignment pocket type mount that fits between the riser and the limb. The plastic pieces I guess have worn out, and the limbs get pulled to the right or left, throwing the string alignment WAY out of wack and now it shoots horribly.
I would like to add an alignment pin to each limb, but have never tried this before. Wondering if anyone is near the NJ area that can help show me how to do this. Would love to get the bow working again for Christmas.
I can travel to you.
Neil

i might geuss the easiest way would be to line the limbs up perfectly, drill through the limb into the riser( mark the drill bit with some tape first- to control depth)- make sure you are perfectly square to the join line between the riser and limb.
then do a decorative phenolic overlay - that covers the hole.
you can get pins from binghams, or kenny.

tape the glass well to avoid tearout and splintering of the glass-  and go SLOW!!

more experienced glass bowyers will chime in here- but that is how i would do it.
g'luck

Thanks Wayne.
I don't have a drillpress for a perfect 90 degree, so wondering if there is a safe way with portable drill.

take a block of wood to someone with a drill press- and using your correct size drill- drill a 90 degree hole thru the block.
shim if need be, when you clamp it to the limbs- pad the clamps, that will work as your guide through the limbs and riser.
hint; if your block edges are all square, then you can use those edges to square up to the line you want- that way you can also double check the hole is square thru the block- by measuring from the hole to the edges
