Where to find thick glass for accents?
« on: December 16, 2011, 09:42:00 PM »
I am looking for black glass 1.5" wide by .080 to .125 thick, all I can find is .060 glass.

Any ideas?

Does it have to be glass?   Last time I looked, you can get black phenolic in thicker sizes from Binghams.  Another option is ebony, I have used it for accents in the riser on several bows.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

Thanks Brad, I am just kind of looking for a supplier. I have a lot of phenolic that will work and may just use that if I cant find a source.

Ah, got it.  Well, I am guessing you asked Binghams already with no avail.  I know they used to carry the thick black glass which guys historically used to make a compound limb...The only pieces of that I saw were much thicker than .125 but I expect they can make it in any size if they still carry it.

I bought 2 pieces of the 3/8"? glass used for compound limbs and they were slightly curved, I havn't used them yet.. I ended up buying a few pieces of the 060 glass.  It's more work but I was happy using the 060 glass. I think I had 26 layers of glass in this longbow, no problems with glue lines.

Last I talked to Binghams, they had to order that thick glass for you,to your specs.
Robert, nice bow. Can you see any joint lines in all that glass lay-up? That is pretty cool looking. Is it heavy?

Chuck, I will look in day  light with reading glasses on.. I built that  bow for Helen, she shoots fita,900,indoor and field archery  with it. The first one I  made for her was  too light so I went crazy with the glass. I was able to cut shelf past center since riser was half glass. But it looks great up close no problem with glue  lines. I wouldn't say the bow is heavy, it's heavier than the walnut, bubinga or shedua riser bows I built off of the same form..  it feels very nice and solid in the hand.. I am still learning the art of bow building, I would not hesitate to use this much glass in a riser again.

I like that one Robert.  Are limbs zebra wood?  You and Helen coming to the charity shoot in a few weeks?

pd thats zebra veneer over actionboo tapers. I used my 64" kennym design form to make this 66" bow..i just added a power lam and a little extra to the stack. Helen has won  a few shoots with it and I know its my best bow so far.. I dont see the glue lines in the riser glass, so I will be using the 060 S2S glass on more riser builds. there is 12 layers of glass in this recurve riser
