TG BOW SWAP 2012 (pics and post)

Ok I've gotta get some pics up on here.  So far the riser is coco with two  thin strips of osage.  Limbs are gonna be trilamb of boo, ipe, and osage with osage power lamb.  Thats the plan anyway.  Just got the riser glued together so far.

Here are some photos from today's session on the first try at a trade bow.

Cut the length down to 66'' overall, going for 64-65'' NTN. Going to recurve the tips after I get it bending some more. I plan on recurving it about an inch more than I took the hickory bow since some will work its way out in tillering. Probably end up with 2-3'' of recurve after tillering. The hickory retained 1 5/8'' recurve out of 2 1/2'' recurve after tillering.

Took it from rough blank to slightly bending today & leaned the handle down since I may try to use that area for some of the straightening. The limbs were worked down from a rough 2'' wide to 1 3/4'' wide. Might be building a caul to reflex it slightly. Still have some prop twist so I need to work on that as well.

I really like working with the stave type of material instead of the board bows I've dealt with. Seems easier to read the wood while working on it.

Going to work on a couple of cherry staves this weekend. Got to move some snow in the morning and then my wife and younger daughter are away for the rest of the wekend. Just me and the older one and she is studying for midterms. Should get plenty of shop time.

I've got my wife’s bow done so now I've got time to focus on a stave..... I've another Yew stave a Hackberry and a Mulberry that are dry everything else needs more time. The Osage I'm working on now is promised.......Hmmmmmmm


Got lots of time I think I'll stew a bit longer...

Congrats!  Talk about jealousy.  I was all happy when I got a 15", but I couldn't bring myself to splurge for the spiral.  I have a spiral cutterhead on my jointer though, it's awesome.

Ralph,I am using all cherry for limbs and cherry and maple for the riser.Flat sawn cherry for the veneers,and cherry action wood for the cores.
Ted I am from Chetek.
The oven was an evolution of trial and error.

Stone tips epoxied on! I went with a slightly longer design and really polished it smooth. The Jasper is really a beutiful green with some red accents and stripes. Being long like this it will take some of the reflex away that the recurves gave me but I think it will be worth it in the end. I hope ****** enjoys it for it's uniquness! Hopefully I can heat treat it to where I don't take on any set. Usually with hickory I end up with a couple inches.
