I've been told to steam Yew but I'm adventourous, what can I say? I use a heat gun with olive oil and slowly move it up and down the limbs one at a time.

Those clamps I stole from ya work great except the rubber ends melt   :scared:

I've heard about the oil treatment, what does it do exactly, and does the oil have any side effects when you are ready to stain and seal the bow?

Baloney on the ends melting, mine were high heat acceptable rubber:) LOL

Roy the oil helps hold the heat in the wood and keeps it from scorching to quickly. I noticed on a couple I did that when I didn't get the oil on the back real good as well as the belly it scorched the back on the edges.

when it comes time to finish I just wipe down real good with denatured alcohol and have had no finish problems. I don't use acetone because it pulls the natural oils in the wood to the surface.

Coaster I have only used dry heat on the yew I have worked and it is tough to get it to hold. I think the next time I am going to shellac the ends and boil the tips and see if that works better. Good looking start none the less and that yew makes a great bow.

Roy the oil keeps the wood from burning and helps get enough heat "into" the limb. With wood like Hackberry you don't need the oil but with Yew, right or wrong I wanted heat not toast  :)  We will see if a heat gun and oil was the right thing to do real soon!!!

The only side effect is my file fills up with oil dust and has to be cleaned with a wire brush a few times until the oil layer is removed.
