Alot of late nights in the shop and lots of bows (pics)
« on: January 14, 2012, 03:12:00 AM »
Just came in from the shop and before I hit the hay I figured I'd drop in.

So far this week I have finished tillering my swap bow and sinew backed, skinned a sinew backed Juniper and put a coat of finish on it, and glued up and finished tillering a boo backed hill bow.

 I'll post some pics tomorrow.

I do need opinions on the hill bow. It's a boo backed trilam with a bloodwood core and an osage belly. The riser is an I beam style with osage outer lams and bloodwood osage bloodwood. I glued up some blocks the same for the tips but I can't decide if I want to stain the boo and go with the matching tips or put some skins on it and go with antler tips.

I'm leaning towards skins cause I never seen a hill bow skinned.

Skin it! Have you ever seen a skin bow that looked bad? Than again I have never seen a bow by the people here that looked bad.

I vote no skins on a boo backed hill.  Let that boo shine!

If the nodes are  pronounced on the boo, I say no skin. If not, then maybe. Pictures? :)

Here's some pics

 Hill bow

I like the idea of letting the boo shine LOL but I also don't like a light colored backing on a hunting bow

The specs are 66" tip to tip, 56# @ 28" I figure she'll lose a few after shoot in. I glued her up with 1.5" of reflex and she has about 3/4" set and I figure will take a shade more which is what I was after. Not bad for a three day build. Now I just got shoot her some and pretty her up.

Here's some pics of the sinewed Juniper. 59" ntn 41# @ 28" might send this one to Kate (if I drew his name    :D ) I'll have to check and see if that's who I got. LOL if not one of my little girls can shoot it

You'll have to check the swap post to see the sinewed Yew.

Very nice Kris. Outter 1/3 look a little stiff but not too bad. The handle riser looks very cool. I think I stain the boo and not skin it. Looks too good naked!

I thought she looked a little stiff on the outer 1/3 myself Pat. I might give her a few swipes with scraper yet after I start shooting it in. It'll need some tweeking for sure.
