osage stave vendor?
« on: January 19, 2012, 01:06:00 PM »
I'm considering buying an osage stave and need some advice.  First, it seems like a crime to have to BUY a stave for a self bow, but I'd like to try osage and we have none in FL.  So, since I'd rather not buy one at all, there's .no way I'm paying $100 for one.  Are there any vendors with more down to earth prices? Second, how do you ensure you'll get a good stave if you are ordering it from out of state?

Obviously you have never harvested osage...or any bow wood for that matter. $100 for a good osage stave ain't that bad if you watched someone harvesting it correctly.
There are lots of guys that live in osage country that will probably trade with you for a good stave. I guess you'll just have to trust who you are buying from.

No, I have never harvested osage.  I have harvested other bow woods, and yes, pat, it is a lot of work.  My point was that paying large sums of money for a stave sort of defeats the appeal of the self bow for me.

Get one from Matt if he is offering. He will take care of you and you will get a stave that will make a fine bow if you can. If he charges $100 total, its a good deal considering where you live.

No buying selling or trading guys.

On another note 100$ is fair for a good piece of yeller wood. It can be found cheaper but you get what you pay for.

In my opinion 100 is too much for any stave. I dont sell many staves anymore, but when i did 60 or 70 bucks was the MOST i ever sold on for. The stuff grows on trees! If a hundred bucks is the going rate, i might jave to get back to sellin.

Dave, Osage does grow on tree's, so does Yew.  If it is not in your area however it may as well be from Mars.  We are just lucky here in Missouri.  Ever price Coco Bolo or Snakewood, where it grows in Central America Coco Bolo is used for Tool handles.
