My new bow kit - Thank you Pearl Drums
« on: February 14, 2012, 09:08:00 AM »
After I cracked my first bow that I was building, Pearl Drums was nice enough to hook me up with a bow kit that included osage slats, a handle, and tip overlays. He didn't just send me the wood, he rough cut it and marked it all up for me.  It was like opening a Christmas present.  I can't wait to get started.  The bow is osage slats that I am going to back with hickory from 3 Rivers.  I don't know what the handle wood is or the tip overlays, but they look good.

I am looking for any advice and recomendations so this one doesn't end up like the last one did.

Here are some bad cell phone pics of my present.

It will be a challenging build, but Im quite sure you and the "kit" can make a servicable bow. Enjoy and TAKE YOUR TIME!

Get yourself some Urac 185 for the glue-ups, since it has gap-filling properties (i.e. it's very forgiving, since you don't have to have perfect mating surfaces), cures at room temperature (70 degrees F and above), and is tried and true.  Then, take your time, use hand tools, and post lots of pics!  :)

I did make a gizmo tool about 2 weeks ago. I can't wait to use it.  I should have the Urac from Three Rivers in about a week to ten days.

I eyeball that wood every time I walk by it.  I can just see the bow it is going to make.

What do you guys think I should do about the knot hole near the tip?  It is directly inline with the rough cut edge.

I have no idea.  Should I fill it in and then try to cut the edge straight or should I leave it cut like it is and have a hump on the side of my limb that includes the knot?  Or something else?

Leave it as and cut your backer out to match when you get there. The knot is solid and is in a part of the limb that doesnt bend much. Leave the hump so your bow is your bow!

What length is the bow now? What's your intended draw length? Any possibility of shortening it?

Closer you get the hole to the tip the less it'll effect things. But even with that hole where it is, you can skillfully reduce the material around it to where it'll have little effect on tip weight.
