I rough up whatever I'm gluing.  Might work without, but it only takes a second.

Definitely!! 60 grit is my fave, phenolic is so slick I wouldn't try it without ruffin it up.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

also clean the dust off from it[after roughing]--there's more on it than you think

thanks guys- i did my first limbs and riser glue up over the last couple 'o days. learnt heaps!!!!!. but all is well- with no mishaps- all i can say is that i am gratefull that the smooth on has a reasonable open time!!
i did rough up well with 100 grit- but will be sure to use 60 next time- then wiped the pieces down with acetone very well- and yup, it was surprising how much dust did come off the phenolic.
glueing up the risers is like trying to balance three oilde ball bearings on top of each other, sure is tricky- next time i will do one piece at a time- where i have more than one phenolic insert in the riser.
got it all sanded down and now start the task of attaching limbs etc

thanks again all.

Take look at the link to see how KennyM kept things lined up while glueing a riser.
