Clear glass advice.
« on: April 27, 2012, 10:06:00 AM »
I am about to glue up my first two clear glass longbows. Just wondering if some of you more experienced bowlers could give me some advice before I get started? Thanks in advance.

I would say, just like a glue up for colored glass.....to ensure no air bubbles, make sure you are gluing up in decently warm conditions, and ensure you have glue on every piece of both lams.  If you are using an air hose form, when gluing it up... I usually give it 30lbs of air and let it sit and squeeze out, then up to 45.....then up to 60 (rather than straight to 60 all at once).

Agree with bjansen, also I dont know what color lams/veneers you are using underneath, but dark veneers are going to show defects in the clear glass much worse than light colored ones.

Also, make sure your lams are very dry.  I put mine indoors and store under low humidity.  Before I do a glue up, I run them on a coffee table under a ceiling fan for a couple days to ensure very little moisture in the lams. I do the same with my riser wood for about a week now after learning a difficult lesson with some tigerwood and a hotbox. If you have a moisture meter, use it.

This is kind of obvious but - Wipe down your clear glass and hold it up to a brite light to see any defects in the glass.  Any obvious defects will show thru the glass on the bow, so set it aside and don't use it.  Some haze is normal, but the light will show any cracks or large voids.

Thanks guys that's good advice. One set of lams is desert camo and one is cross grain grey. Its superaction wood. I am using an air hose.  I will post pics as I go. I am also doing two in black glass. I'm not to worried about that. I have done six of those.
