New take-down longbow and curly cottonwood
« on: June 07, 2012, 02:53:00 PM »
I reworked my take-down longbow form this spring to address some instability issues. This newest version will be the final one, I really like how it shoots. The riser is 21 laminations of burgandy and charcoal dymondwood with 8 layers of glass. The limbs are maple cores with curly cottonwood veneer. It is 60" long and draws smooth to 28" and starts to stack a little at 29". Unfortunately I cant tell you how fast it shoots because my chronograph died a violent death in front of a 450/400 nitro express, I could have sworn it looked like an elephant   :knothead:   .

If looks were a measure of performance that bow is a ROCKET!

Thanks for sharing....sorry to hear about your Chrono's untimely demise

Wow!  That is a great looking bow and wood selection.  A 3 piece is my next design to try.  I'm shamelessly saving these pics to my idea folder :^)

Thanks guys,
Rick,
I bought the cottonwood lumber from a guy with a portable sawmill. I cut and sand all my laminations. It looks similiar to curly maple except it has wider bands and looks more 3-dimensional.

Great looking bow Greg.
Did you pick a spot on the chrono and how did it taste and what wine pairs well with it.

Interesting way to do the riser.  I assume you glued up the 29 pieces in a form to get the pad angles and accent swoop instead of cutting it from a squared out piece?

Exactly right. I made a c-clamp form for the riser. It takes a lot of time and a bunch of glue but I like the looks and it sure is strong.

Razorback,
The only wine that I have is Idaho Huckleberry. It didn't make the chronograph taste any better though.
