Life is Good!
« on: June 18, 2012, 08:59:00 AM »
Just wanted to share my joys of being a "bowyer"!  I recently mobilized to my project site for the field season (I'm a Geologist with USEPA/USACE).  I'm lucky to be able to time my field work out with my wife’s summer break (teacher) and my kid’s summer vacation.  I have been able to rent a camp on an island located on the St. Lawrence River since 1999.  I brought up a bunch of bow blanks I previously cut out and set up a small bow making area on my deck...don't need much.  With my friends help, we recently completed my portable tillering tree (I can send you details if interested)...it works great!  Yesterday I completed tillering a cherry bow (light weight kid’s bow), broke my scavenger bow, and made some headway on a hop horn beam bow.  It doesn't get much better than using the horizon as a back drop while tillering!

Have a great summer!

Someone's got to do it!  Might as well make the best of it!!  My neighbor just cut down a bunch of ash (not sure what type yet; green-black)...I have three logs ready to be split after work today.

Nothing like a geologist stating the insanely obvious (upon hindsight) to the rest of us lugs about using the horizon to tiller. Great idea!!!

Thanks B_B_66!  My buddy made the tillering tree for me.  This design is great for use almost anywhere!  I like the sliding yard stick...I can adjust for different handle thickness (i.e., for brace height).  I need to put another coat of wood wax on it.

Drop me a PM describing your focus in Geology.  Good luck with your studies!
