Shooting with limb twist
« on: June 18, 2012, 03:00:00 PM »
58" glass recurve with 1 3/4" limbs.
I pulled my first attempt at a bow out the form a few weeks ago and was disappointed to see that the top glass moved quite a bit in the form.  I decided to keep building it for the experience anyway and just hang it on the wall when I got done.
Due to the glass slipping I ended up shaping that limb off center to the riser.
Long story short it has limb twist in that limb and is fairly narrow already from the glass sliding off to one side.
I know I can sand the opposite side to try and bring it back but am concerned about narrowing that limb any more.
How narrow is too narrow???  It would probably be down to 1 1/2" if a take more off to straighten it.  Maybe even less.
I shot it yesterday in the back yard for fun and it actually shot nicely.   Is there any danger in shooting this bow as is??
Sorry, I didnt take any pictures before I left for work for 4 days.

The real danger would,be if it could come unstrung.
If you could straighten it out and still have 1 1/2 inches I'd go for that. You would have to do both limbs to get the tiller right.
A lighter bow that was straight would be the best bet.

I don't have a problem reducing the weight. It's sitting at 58 lbs right now which is on the high side for me.
I will see what I can do when I get back in town.
Would like to save it if I can.  If not I will be onto try number two soon anyway.
Thanks for the help.

Haven't made a glass bow for about 10 years. I think we used little screwed on bumpers on the sides  of the form to keep the stack from slipping.
Good luck with all.

Thanks. I made a mistake and tried to get it together before work one day and rushed through it.
Used some fender washers on the sides to keep it lined up but in the hurry I must have goofed it up.
I have learned a ton on this bow and the number one thing is to slow down and get it right the first time.

Been there before. I used to have my wife help me wrap plastic around the stack then I wrapped masking tape around the limbs about 6 inches apart to keep it in place.
