I'm done, what say you?

Well, if I don't have it yet, I'm done with tryin'.  Until I can hook up with someone to walk me through tillering anyway.  Well, what do you think?  It's 66" tip to tip, it's 45# at 28".  I'm putting a brown paper backing on it just cause.  You won't see that in the picture though, it's drying right now.

Looks Great man! That turned out really nice, osage is some good stuff. The more bows you tiller the easier it gets but it still takes a lot of patience. Seems like I remember some old fart up in Pennsylvania telling you that bow would never make it, haha. Just out of curiosity, why did you put the paper backing on it?

Looks like it may be a little stiff mid limb, but I'm still pretty green, the vets 'round here know best, let's hope they chime in.

Thanks for the comments guys.  I put the backing on it for peace of mind I suppose.  My archery/bowhunting/bowbuilding mentor suggested I always back a "selfbow".  Now that it's backed I know it's technically not a selfbow.  However, as I get older I'm trying to listen to those that have "been there, done that".  So, it will get painted flat brown or tan on the back and then some tru-oil all over.  I'd like to put a rest and handle wrap on it then I'm done.  I need to order some different spined arrows and then shoot, shoot, shoot.  Nebraska opener is 60+ days away, but who's counting!?

Just something to ponder...Jim Hamm, in one of the TBBs said he backed all of his early attempts at bows, just to get them to hold together.  If the tiller is even close on Osage, and the wood is sound, a backing is perfectly OK, but not necessary.  Good looking bow!

Sure back the early attempts but I almost never back a bow these days. It kind of depends on the wood though. Jawge

I say get her all prettied up and get to shooting it. You are in for a real thrill this fall Jeremy. To hold a bow that you made in the woods adds a lot more to the hunt and if you blessed to take an animal with it. I telly you it does not get any better. Good luck buddy and Great bow.

I will be sure to post pics when finished.  The brown paper backing is the type of brown paper you would get to wrap a package before mailing.  It comes in a roll like wrapping paper.  I read about the idea from 4est trekker's build-a-long with red oak.  He stated that you're basically glueing a thin veneer of wood onto the back.  I'm adding it so I can paint the back a flat color since I plan on doing some spot and stalk in the open terrain of the West this fall.  Stay tuned...

Backing with paper like that doesn't mean it is not a selfbow.  As long as the backing doesn't take over the tension work, it is still a selfbow.
